Changing behaviour to improve population health and wellbeing

We are a team of behaviour change researchers dedicated to improving population health and wellbeing. We do this by understanding, changing, and supporting the maintenance of health behaviours.

Our research focuses on supporting healthier lifestyles - helping people to stop smoking, be more physically active, eat well, reduce risky alcohol consumption, and prevent infectious diseases - and improving disease self-management and quality of health care delivery.

We co-produce and evaluate behaviour change interventions, informed by influences on behaviour, lived experience, theory and evidence. They include digital interventions, individual and group-based interventions targeting the public and patients, and interventions targeting health care professionals

We use innovative behavioural science frameworks and approaches to underpin our interventions, as well as creative and social approaches to engage seldom-heard communities in behaviour change research. We work in partnership with people with lived experience and stakeholders.

Our goal is to empower people and communities to live better and healthier lives and reduce health inequalities through behaviour change.

We deliver teaching in behaviour change, development and evaluation of behaviour change interventions, and behavioural science across a range of courses using the latest evidence, tools and frameworks. Our teaching is directly informed by our research.

UEA-led active projects where group members are principal or co-investigators:

PhD projects

  • Understanding and promoting a Mediterranean diet and physical activity to prevent cognitive decline (Jess Marshall)

  • Co-development of a supported self-management intervention for eating, drinking and swallowing in Motor Neurone Disease (Kirsty Harrison)

  • Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Digital Health Promotion Intervention on Hypertension Awareness and Risk Factor Knowledge among Adults in Lagos State, Nigeria (Princess Chinwe)

  • Community Pharmacy-Led Integrated Lifestyle Intervention for Smoking Cessation and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Lagos, Nigeria (Onyebuchi Eugene)

Our COVID-19 health behaviour and well-being daily tracker study was one of the largest single case (N-of-1) studies ever undertaken, enrolling over 1,000 people to complete daily measures on their health behaviours and wellbeing for 90 days during the first UK lockdown.

Our study was cited in UK Defra’s National Food Strategy and Public Health Scotland’s report on pandemic-related alcohol harm.

Our first paper from this study also received over 400 pieces of international, national and local media coverage, with over 5 million estimated views, including TV/radio interviews.
