All BSc degrees within Norwich Business School share a common first year, providing a broad introduction to business disciplines. This structure ensures you gain a well-rounded understanding of business before specialising, helping you confirm that you’re on the right path.
Throughout your core modules, you’ll explore essential business areas, including capital budgeting, economic and digital environments, organisational dynamics, and strategic management. You'll also gain expertise in quantitative methods for financial data analysis, investment decisions, and risk management, providing a well-rounded understanding of how companies operate and grow.
By the end of your first year, you’ll have a strong foundation not only in finance but across multiple business disciplines, enhancing your career prospects. If you discover an interest in another subject area within the BSc programs, you may have the opportunity to switch to a different pathway.
Compulsory Modules
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
The degree offers high-quality teaching informed by cutting-edge research, integrating technology and real-world case studies to bridge the gap between theory and practice, creating a career-oriented learning environment that prepares you for the demands of modern industries. Self-directed learning, combined with active participation in student-led societies, offers valuable extracurricular opportunities to apply your knowledge, refine practical skills, and enhance your career readiness. In several modules, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with students from other degrees across the school, strengthening your teamwork and communication skills — both essential for the workplace — while gaining valuable insights into different business disciplines.
Your first year focuses on building a strong foundation in finance and business management. Core concepts are primarily delivered through interactive lectures, often in large-group settings. These are supported by smaller seminars and workshops, where you’ll work through real-world examples individually and in teams. Some seminars will take place in computer labs, providing hands-on experience with financial tools and data analysis techniques.
In addition to structured classes, you’ll develop essential study skills through support sessions and independent learning. To succeed, you’ll need to dedicate significant time outside of scheduled teaching to reviewing lecture notes, completing exercises, and deepening your understanding of key topics.
Assessment
Assessment in your first year is designed to build your confidence and academic skills, providing a solid foundation in key finance and management disciplines. You’ll be assessed through a mix of individual and group tasks, including presentations, reports, essays, and exams, which combine theoretical knowledge with practical application to develop key skills such as critical thinking, research, and analysis. Many first-year modules include a mid-semester formative assessment that aims to provide valuable feedback, help you identify areas for improvement, and refine your understanding before the primary summative assessment.
Structure
In your second year, you'll build on year one’s foundation, deepening your expertise in finance while developing essential business management skills. You'll gain a stronger understanding of business operations, financial institutions, and statistical techniques for analysing data and assessing risk—crucial for informed business decision-making.
Alongside core finance studies, you can customise your degree with optional modules in management, business strategy, and technology. These will enhance your understanding of how organisations operate, compete, and innovate. You may explore long-term business planning, leadership development, or the role of information systems in driving efficiency. Additionally, you’ll gain insights into key legal frameworks, such as contract and company law, that shape financial and business transactions.
This year will refine your problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills — highly valued by employers — while preparing you for the advanced analytical and strategic challenges of your final year.
