A Welcome Reception was held last month for new students who are receiving prestigious donor-supported scholarships.Five students standing on staircase

More than 50 new undergraduate and postgraduate students gathered in the foyer of The Enterprise Centre with some returning students who have also received donor-supported scholarships to chat about their experiences and find out what to expect during their time at UEA.

Current Medical Aspirations Scholarship recipient, MED student Jay Aldous, spoke to guests about what holding a donor-supported scholarship means to him and explained how he felt when he met his donor for the first time:

“I always remember the first time I met my scholarship donor. When I was told that my donor and his wife were taking me to dinner, I was so nervous – I was expecting some kind of posh fine-dining with at least six different types of cutlery. But they were so down-to-earth and were lovely people to speak to; they were excited to get to know me.”

The University is very fortunate to have the support of a growing community of donors who give generously to provide scholarships to support talented undergraduate, postgraduate and research students. These donors all come from different walks of life but they have one thing in common – they value UEA and believe that the experience gained here can set students on an excellent path for the future. Indeed, for many of the alumni donors, their time at UEA was the stepping stone to very successful careers.

Scholarship donors and recipients will be invited to the annual Scholarships Reception in March where the Vice-Chancellor will formally present the awards and students will have the opportunity to meet and thank their donors in person.

In his address to the students, host of the Welcome Reception Professor Neil Ward, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic), said: “Scholarships like yours only go to the most able and dedicated students so you should all be very proud of what you have achieved in receiving them. The Scholarships Reception in March is a great occasion for starting your scholar-donor relationship – a relationship that can provide you with valuable support, career advice and encouragement throughout your time at UEA and beyond.”
