Our Researchers

Film, Television and Media

Our Postgraduate research community covers a range of cultural and media topics, from the work of creative individuals (Rick Baker, Stan Brakhage, Ken Russell) through audience studies (on streaming services, online fora, film exhibition), to expanding new media and music histories (indie film promotion, 21st century horror, popular music and disability) and producing new creative fiction and documentary-led projects.

Our staff can supervise PhD projects across a wide number of topics, but we have particular specialisms in:

  • Archival analysis, critique, and practice

  • Digital cultural heritage

  • Gender, including feminism, masculinity and queerness

  • Media and environmentalism

  • Media history, including the role of material cultures

  • Media, culture and politics

  • National cinemas, including America, Australia, Britain, India and Turkey

  • Popular music

  • Practice-based research across audio drama, documentary, fiction film, music and podcasts
