Adult male literacy learners in Afghanistan

Naeim Maleki, UNESCO Chair member and Research Associate at UEA’s School of Education and Lifelong Learning has had a blog published on the UKFIET website. Naeim was awarded a bursary from UKFIET to present at their 2025 conference; this blog builds on that presentation and draws on findings from his PhD ethnographic study of adult male literacy learners in Afghanistan. Naeim asks the question: What if literacy programmes started with the literacy practices that adults already use every day? Instead of asking what adult learners lacked, he explored they used literacy and numeracy across different literacy domains and what these everyday practices might offer for the development of adult literacy programmes.
