Research

The recently established School of Chemistry, Pharmacy and Pharmacology houses a diverse, supportive and creative research community comprising >25 research groups with research fellows, postdoctoral research scientists, PhD and MScR students and dedicated technical staff. Our work is wide reaching - we tackle the latest global health challenges, address fundamental processes in biology and chemistry, derive new synthetic schemes, explore theoretical challenges in physical chemistry and engineer next-generation pharmaceutical formulations. More detail can be found by exploring our research themes.

Our research is well funded, financed by competitive grants from a variety of sources including UKRI, BBSRC, EPSRC, Horizon Europe, Innovate UK, the Royal Society, and industrial companies. We have also attracted funding from various charities including the Wellcome Trust, Leverhulme Trust, the Wolfson Foundation, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, Worldwide Cancer Research, the Big C Appeal, Community for Analytical Measurement Science (CAMS), and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

In recent REF exercises (2014, 2021) our research was returned to multiple units of assessments for chemistry (UoA8) and for allied health professions (UoA3) together with the School of Health Sciences.
