For eligible English students the NHS will fund your fifth year of study onwards. In calculating years of study, years repeated on your course are not included but the intercalation year is included. Most students intercalate either after their third or fourth year of study.
If you intercalate after your third year of study, your BSc year can be funded through Student Finance England (SFE) with a tuition fee loan and maintenance support. Your MSc year could be funded by the SFE Postgraduate Loan (PGL) scheme for loans up to £10,000, but please check with the relevant University to see if your course choice is funded.
Upon returning to your MB BS course, NHS funding will cover your fifth and sixth years of study. If you intercalate after your fourth year of study, the NHS will pay up to £9250 for tuition fees (you may need to pay any amount over this) either for a BSc or MSc, and you may be eligible for an income-assessed bursary (currently worth up to £4491 for a 52 week course) plus a non means-assessed grant of £1000. BSc students should also receive a reduced rate maintenance loan worth £2324 from SFE, but unfortunately MSc students are not eligible for this. Students funded by the NHS cannot access the PGL scheme.
Funding may differ from the above for foundation year students and second degree medical students. If you are from another part of the UK, you will want to enquire with your appropriate funding agency for specific information. EU students who are eligible for NHS funding (in their fifth year of funding onward) will have funding limited to tuition fees only, so will not receive bursaries or grants for living costs. Overseas students are not funded. Students can also access Disability Student Allowance if they are eligible. No UEA bursary is available for NHS-funded students except for MED School bursaries, if they are available.
