Support the next generation of dentists and help improve access to dental care across the East of England.

Across Norfolk and the wider East of England, access to NHS dental care has reached crisis point.

In our local region, there are just 38 dentists per 100,000 people. In one year alone, more than 1,600 people attended hospital emergency departments in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn for dental treatment.

Behind these figures are people living with pain, struggling to eat or speak comfortably, or waiting until their condition becomes an emergency. Rural, coastal and disadvantaged communities are often affected most.

Training dentists here, for the communities that need them

UEA is establishing a new Dental School in Norwich to help address the region's longstanding shortage of NHS dentists.

The University has been allocated 25 government-funded dental training places each year, with the first students expected to begin their five-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery course in September 2027. Applications are already open.

Students will combine scientific learning and simulation with hands-on clinical experience. From autumn 2028, up to 36 second-year students will begin offering appointments to local patients under supervision. As the Dental School grows, this will rise to as many as 144 students across Years 2–5 delivering supervised dental care and oral health support. This means students will begin making a difference locally while they are still training, while gaining the practical experience they need for their future careers.

Training at UEA

Specialist teaching and clinical facilities will help students develop the skills and confidence needed for modern dental practice.

Care for local patients

Supervised appointments will allow students to develop their clinical skills while supporting access to dental care and oral health advice in the region.

Strengthening our regional workforce

Training dentists locally gives us a greater opportunity to retain their knowledge and skills in the East of England.
