Stephen Lambert OBE returns to UEA
)
One of the creative forces behind The Celebrity Traitors recently came back to where it all began.
Stephen Lambert OBE (SOC78), one of Britain's most successful television producers, will return to campus to deliver this year’s spring Lasdun Lecture, “Why We Watch: The psychology of reality and the power of story.” As founder and CEO of Studio Lambert, Stephen has helped shape some of the most talked-about unscripted television of the past two decades, and in this lecture he’ll explore the human instincts that keep us glued to the screen.

Why this lecture, why now?
Reality and competition formats can look deceptively simple: a set of rules, a group of strangers, and a high-stakes goal. But the best shows work because they tap into something deeper: trust and betrayal, empathy and ambition, fear and hope. Drawing on his experience creating global hits watched by millions, Stephen will unpack what sits behind our fascination with “real” people under pressure, and how modern storytelling is evolving in the streaming age.
Reflecting on his return to UEA, Stephen shared:
“This university helped give me the foundation to better understand the power of storytelling, and it’s exciting to come back and reflect on how those early ideas have shaped my career in television.”

From UEA to prime-time storytelling
As an alumni community, we’re always proud to see UEA graduates shaping culture and conversation and Stephen’s career is a standout example of how creative thinking can translate into global impact. This Lasdun Lecture is a chance to hear not just what makes reality TV work, but why it works: the psychology, the structure, and the storytelling choices that transform a format into a phenomenon.
