This year's 60th Anniversary Scholarship Reception, hosted by the Development, Alumni, and Campaigns Office, was a night to remember. Held in May, the evening celebrated the positive impact of scholarship donors and the achievements of our scholars, featuring heartfelt speeches and a surprise message from Stephen Fry, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
Around 50 scholars attended the reception, many with their family and friends, providing a unique opportunity for donors to meet the students they support. The evening kicked off with a poignant student-created video, expressing deep gratitude for the scholarships that have significantly impacted their lives. This heartfelt montage set a moving tone for the night, highlighting the meaningful impact of scholarships.
A surprise video message from Honorary Graduate and world-renowned comedian, actor, author, and philanthropist Stephen Fry topped off the evening. In his inimitable style, Fry congratulated the scholars and praised the donors for their generosity and commitment to education:
"Philanthropy and giving to education have become a big thing, and an important thing. So we thank them, we thank them indeed. You have made an enormous difference."
UEA’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor David Maguire, emphasised the critical role of philanthropy in UEA's success. He stated, "UEA’s success is built on the unwavering support of its philanthropic community, dedicated academics, diligent staff, and exceptional students." He spoke about the significant impact of giving and the collective effort required to sustain the University’s legacy of excellence.
Guest speaker Dwayne Stallings (EAS97), sponsor of the Dwayne Stallings Scholarship, shared personal insights on the importance of giving back to the community. He highlighted that those in a position to help have a natural responsibility to support others. With over 16 years of experience in the finance industry, Dwayne, a Raymond James Financial Adviser for Liberty Bank in Connecticut, U.S., reinforced the evening’s theme of philanthropy and community spirit.
Freddie Marlowe, the 2023 Difference Undergraduate scholar, then took to the podium, offering heartfelt thanks to his donor and everyone present. His speech echoed the tangible difference that scholarships make in students' lives, enabling them to pursue their dreams and achieve their goals. Freddie expressed his gratitude not just for the financial support, but also for the belief and encouragement that comes with it.
