James Platt Centre for Language Learning
Facilities
The James Platt Centre (JPC) exists within the School of Language and Communication Studies. It consists of a large, multi-media self-access study room which receives live satellite broadcasts from France, Spain and Germany plus others on request and houses up-to-date computers on which it is possible to view and listen to internet TV and radio broadcasts. Computers are set up to allow immediate access to a range of language-specific software plus tools such as keyboard-switch options, customised spellcheckers, comprehensive dictionary and translating facilities including specific translation software on some machines. The computers are equipped with CD players and microphones and provide access to the L:drive (a virtual resource library).
There is also a reservable viewing/editing room where students may prepare presentations, group view DVDs and practice listening and oral skills. A digitised Sanako language laboratory is mainly used for teaching but can be accessed by students when it is free.
