Isokon Trust

A collection of papers on the Trust which was set up in 1999 to find an organisation interested in funding the restoration and refurbishment of the iconic Isokon Flats, Lawn Road, Hampstead. Isokon Trust also aimed to educate and promote the history of this grade 1 listed building.

Lawn Road Flats, as it was originally known, opened in 1934. The building was designed by Wells Coates and commissioned by Jack Pritchard. Representing a key landmark in British social and architectural history, the building was home to leading lights from the Bauhaus fleeing Nazi Germany, Walter Gropius (architect), Marcel Breuer (designer) and Moholy-Nagy (graphic designer). Artists and writers included Agatha Christie, Henry Moore and Kenneth and Diana Rowntree.

The building’s name changed to Isokon Flats when it was bought by the London Borough of Camden in 1972. In May 2001 Notting Hill Housing Group was chosen to purchase and restore the building. The restoration project was awarded to Avanti Architects.
