Welcome to the School of Computing Sciences. We are one of the top computing science departments in the UK. In the 2011 National Student Survey we were ranked joint 8th out of all the universities and institutions in England offering computing science courses. For our research, in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 65% of our research activity was rated as internationally excellent and 20% rated as world leading.
Our student facilities are excellent. We have six general purpose computing labs, a specialised computer graphics lab (with haptic feedback devices) and an electronics hardware lab. We are particularly proud of our new Apple Macintosh Lab which contains iMacs, iPads and iPod touch devices for our undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Our work in computing science is focused on real-world problems and applications. Consequently we have very strong links with industry and business and this is reflected in the teaching and student experience that we offer. We have courses that allow a student to spend a year on a placement in industry and have regular guest speakers from industry who contribute to our teaching. We also have close links with many of our ex-students who visit us regularly and offer valuable practical advice to students.
