Welcome to American Studies
The University of East Anglia has been a prestigious and pioneering centre for teaching and research in American Studies since it was first established in the 1960s. Our research expertise includes contemporary literature and popular culture, drama, poetry and the avant-garde, American politics and international relations, the nineteenth century and American gothic, the literature and culture of the Mississippi River, and Native American and African American history and culture. These research specialisms relate directly to our teaching so that in an American Studies seminar you might encounter questions on The Great Gatsby and the American Dream, beat poetry or Native American resistance literature and film. You might explore the significance of contemporary American foreign policy overseas or the politics of race, class and gender at home, the classic novels of the 19th century or African American culture and history from slavery to modern times.
The Year Abroad Programme
We have a thriving undergraduate Year Abroad Programme which offers an exciting opportunity to experience American culture, society and higher education first hand. The programme now includes some Canadian and Australian universities, offering you the chance to obtain new perspectives on the United States from these rather different vantage points.
The Arthur Miller Centre
The Arthur Miller Centre supports major new research projects and seeks to promote interest in the study of the United States throughout Europe. It sponsors an annual International Literary Festival that brings major writers from around the world. Recent visitors have included Martin Amis, Beryl Bainbridge, A.S. Byatt, Margaret Drabble, Louis de Bernieres, Richard Ford, Stephen Fry, Germaine Greer, Seamus Heaney, Clive James, Norma Mailer, Frank McCourt, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie and Zadie Smith.
UEA American Studies Students Give Their Teachers 100%
American Studies students at the University of East Anglia could not be more satisfied with the teaching they receive. They gave their teaching staff 100% in the annual National Student Survey.
This is the fourth year of the annual survey which asks final year students to rate their satisfaction with aspects of their course and their overall satisfaction with the University.
