A key area of research strength in the School of Health Sciences relates to the management of dementias, i.e. how to best manage, cope and accept the changes that result from such neurodegenerative conditions.

To achieve these, we transform questions highlighted by those affected by dementias into research questions in our work, while ensuring those affected are involved in this process. For instance, we have been researching how to maintain a person living in their own home for as long as possible, while keeping them as active as possible. We have been looking at how to best support quality of life for those affected by dementia.

We address dementia research by bringing together various fields of expertise; neurosciences, daily function, psychosocial aspects of dementia, family and paid carers. We investigate across diverse settings; home, health and social care services and charities, ensuring our work is prepared for implementation and impact.
