PhD training in Economics

A PhD is a research training degree, and our goal is for all our students to leave UEA with both a doctorate and a wide range of research and teaching skills.

During the first year of the PhD in Economics, students attend a number of compulsory core modules and to start working on their research (Note: core modules of the Autumn semester 2023 are suspended, they will take place in Autumn 2024). Having passed their probationary review at the end of the first year, in the second and third year students have the opportunity to take further optional modules, attend summer schools, and benefit from a rich menu of Personal and Professional Development courses. Further training opportunities are available through the SENSS network. We have an interdisciplinary approach to research and strong links with the Centre for Competition Policy, the Centre for Behavioural and Experimental Social Science  and other research centres. This allows you to liaise with academics from other Schools across the University.

Students enrolled in the PhD programme in Economics are required to start their registration period on October 1st of the relevant academic year. The core modules in Mathematics, Econometrics, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics are delivered during the Autumn Semester (Note: these are suspended in 2023, they will be delivered in 2024). The core module in Research Methods is delivered in the Spring Semester.

Before applying to the PhD programme in Economics, prospective students should check the specific guidelines of the School of Economics concerning Supervision.
