My UEA Story: Oksana Shlonimskaya

My name is Oksana, an Actuarial Science student here at UEA. In 2015 I studied foundation at INTO UEA, which allowed me smooth progress into this magical university. Other than having high ratings and a gorgeous campus, UEA has a warm atmosphere with staff who are more than willing to help anyone they can, as well as students with all kinds of backgrounds.

I was born in a small town in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, and moved to the US for 4.5 years when I was about 10, after which I moved to Panama to finish high school for 3.5 years. Having lived in so many different cultures, and being a new student so many times, I understand very well the challenges faced by international students, which is why I am more than happy to be in a position to be providing support for students, before you come to UEA, as well as while you are here.

This university provides so many opportunities, which is another reason why I love UEA so much! They have made my experience as a freshman quite fulfilling. I joined the International Student Society at the beginning of last year and have now become their treasurer, and it has allowed me to meet so many different people. I became a representative for my course as well as a member of the International Assembly committee of the Student Union. There are so many different societies and sports clubs – anyone could find a place for their interests. The Students’ Support Services is a great resource of help as well.

Norwich is a relatively small town, which is why I fell in love with it, but it’s big enough for all kinds of fun and a great nightlife. Situated so close to the beach, such as Cromer or Great Yarmouth, as well as having its own lake on campus, the sightseeing opportunities are tremendous! Even though I, myself, prefer hot weather, it doesn’t get too cold here either, which is also nice.
