Research Excellence and Environment
The MMB programme offers an exceptional research and training environment on the Norwich Research Park, where students benefit from access to world-class researchers in microbial genomics and bioinformatics, multi-million-pound investment in our computing and sequencing infrastructure (includes Oxford Nanopore PromethION technology) and our role as the leading research organisation in the £2m MRC CLIMB-BIG-DATA project, which underpins and synergises with the MMB’s research and training.
The MMB DTP has a distinctive partnership with frontline government agencies and the NHS that provides students with hands-on experience of the translational impact of microbial genomics, equipping them to work in government agencies and the healthcare sector, e.g. in health informatics.

more...The Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) is a UKRI-funded institute located in a new £80m building on the Norwich Research Park, with a focus on microbes and antimicrobial resistance in the food chain, with cutting-edge expertise in microbial genomics, cloud computing and bioinformatics. Existing QIB PhD studentships cover microbiology, bioinformatics, evolution, biochemistry, immunology, molecular and cell biology and public health & epidemiology. Students embarking on a PhD studentship in the Quadram Institute become key members of one of their research groups, which are led by scientists with international reputations in their fields.
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital
more...The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is located on the Norwich Research Park, and serves the people of Norfolk and North Suffolk, carrying out nearly 1 million outpatient appointments, day case procedures and inpatient admissions annually. NNUH will contribute with the know-how built from clinical and laboratory efforts to tackle COVID-19 and will provide access to state-of-art clinical laboratory facilities and material for students supervised by NNUH staff or on placement. The Microbiology Department at NNUH plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with infection, developing and testing new antimicrobials, monitoring the spread of antimicrobial resistance and disease, educating and advising fellow health professionals on the prudent use of antimicrobials both in the hospital environment and in the community.

more...The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with headquarters in Weybridge, Surrey. APHA employs around 2,200 staff, based at various sites across the UK and works across the UK to prevent/control livestock disease and safeguard the public from zoonotic viral as well as bacterial diseases (including AMR), through surveillance, national/international reference laboratory functions (including an FAO Reference Centre for AMR) and a wide range of research activities. APHA has excellent high-containment laboratories and animal facilities and has pioneered the application of microbial genomics to outbreak detection/control and tracking the spread of pathogens and AMR in livestock.
