Description

This module will provide a solid grounding in the principles of financial management. Accordingly, you will become familiar with the decision-making process around investment appraisal, sources of finance, capital structure, risk management and valuation.

Aims and Objectives

On completion of the module, you will acquire insight and understanding of the following:

  • Investment appraisal: This involves the analysis of investment projects, incorporating risk, term structure of interest rates, tax, the cost of capital and rates of return

  • Capital markets: This covers the debt and equity capital markets and how they operate, the role of intermediaries and market efficiency

  • Capital structure: This addresses the issue of the optimal capital structure of firms, mergers and acquisitions and the market for corporate control, gearing and the basics of hedging and international finance

  • Valuation: An introduction to the art of business valuation providing an overview of theoretical valuation techniques, the factors enhancing value and methods of realising value.

Learning outcomes

You will learn how to grow your numeracy and quantitative skills, abstract meaning from financial data, and solve problems from decision-making techniques acquired in your study. Importantly, you will be able to conduct research into business and management issues, and prepare clear, competent and coherent business reports.
