Promoting interest in the study of the United States
The Arthur Miller Institute for American Studies is an initiative designed to further interest in the study of the United States, to promote major new research projects and to facilitate the movement of people between Britain and America.
Based at the University of East Anglia in Norwich we seek to establish and maintain international networks of contacts in Europe and North America.
The Arthur Miller Institute has published books (Writers in Conversation, 2 volumes; America Embattled: The Militia Movement); with Methuen Books Arthur Miller and Company and Arthur Miller Remembered) and a CD ROM on Arthur Miller's The Crucible. It sponsors conferences ("Classes and Class Struggle in the Early Modern Atlantic World," "In Our Time: Godfrey Hodgson and America," "1968," "Race, Memory and Reclamation.")
The Miller Institute sponsors an annual £500 prize for the best journal length article on any aspect of the United States published by a member of the British Association for American Studies. As a member of the American Studies Network, of which it was a founder member, it is involved in the biennial award of 1000 Euros to the best book on any aspect of the United States by a member of the European Association for American Studies.
Each Autumn, the Miller Institute holds an International Literary Festival UEA Live . The list of writers includes Arthur Miller, Norman Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, Joseph Heller, Richard Ford, Toni Morrison, Jane Smiley, William Styron, William Gibson, Frank McCourt, Susan Sontag, Gore Vidal, Elmore Leonard, Jonathan Franzen, Grace Paley, Bill Bryson, John Ashbery, E. L. Doctorow, T. Caragheson Boyle, Donna Tartt, Jay McInerney, David Guterson, Amy Tan (with Canadians Margaret Atwood, Jane Urquhart, Mordecai Richler, Michael Ondaatje and Australians Peter Carey, Les Patterson, Thomas Keneally).
