Raising Concerns

Raising concerns promptly help us maintain safe, supportive and high-quality practice learning environments.

This page outlines how learners, UEA staff and placement providers can report concerns, including issues relating to patient safety and safeguarding, learner wellbeing or any aspect of the practice learning experience.

There are three main types of concern that are generally reported related to practice learning:

  1. Concerns about a learner’s professional conduct or professional suitability (Fitness to Practise).

  2. Concerns about a learner’s wellbeing.

  3. Concerns about the quality of the learning environment, including issues influencing the ability of learners to achieve practice learning outcomes.

Issues relating to a learner’s behaviour or performance such as knowledge and skills gaps, professional attributes and communication, should be addressed in the first instance through the assessment process and supported by a learning contract (action plan). Issues should generally be submitted as a Fitness to Practise concern only if the student is not responding to feedback or an action plan.

If you believe that any of the concerns you have may constitute a safeguarding issue, you must also report it to:

  • The Safeguarding Lead of the organisation in which the placement is situated

Use the guidance below to identify the correct process for your concern. If you are unsure about the most appropriate way to raise your concern, please seek advice from:

  • The Academic Link for your area (Link Lecturer / Visiting Tutor)

  • The Course Director of the course on which the learner is enrolled

  • The Academic Assessor (for NMC regulated programmes)
