Why you should choose us
Course Overview
Are you looking to build a career in social media management, digital content creation, or the global media industry? Do you hold an advanced diploma or equivalent qualification? If so, our BA Digital Media (Final Year Entry) programme could be the ideal course for you.
UEA was one of the UK’s pioneers in teaching film, television, and media studies. We’re based in Norwich, a city that is part of UNESCO's global Creative Cities network and often referred to as the “City of Stories.” We’ve played a key role in shaping the UK’s media industry—our alumni include the Chief Executive of Film London, as well as up-and-coming filmmakers, some of whom showcase their work at Norwich Film Festival, one of Europe's leading short film festivals.
Today, we’re at the cutting edge of digital storytelling, exploring how traditional forms are being transformed by new media. There’s no better place to study the practical art of creating film, video, and social media content. Half of the modules on this course immerse you in hands-on media production and content creation. Industry professionals will help nurture your creative talents. You’ll work in our outstanding BLOC media facilities, including a broadcast-standard TV studio. Our Media Suite, equipped with high-spec iMacs, supports your post-production work, while access to high-quality film cameras allows you to bring your creative visions to life. You’ll also be able to use these facilities outside of class time to develop personal projects or work on commissions from local clients.
You’ll gain key insights into the digital media landscape, including how to analyse audiences and create content that connects with them. You'll explore the impact of AI on media, and how algorithms and machine learning help deliver content to new users. A focus on global business culture prepares you to apply your media skills in the corporate world, if you choose to. You’ll also strengthen your communication and English skills through weekly two-hour language classes.
Upon graduation, you'll be ready for a range of roles across the global media and creative industries. You might become a digital content creator or apply your skills in brand strategy, PR, or marketing. Whatever path you choose, your versatile skill set will help you stand out in a competitive job market.
Study and Modules
Structure
This course takes place over two semesters. In the first semester, you’ll gain essential knowledge to navigate the contemporary media industries. You’ll learn how to engage effectively with audiences and understand both the potential and pitfalls of Artificial Intelligence. You’ll also develop the skills to communicate confidently in a range of global business settings.
In the second semester, you’ll put that knowledge into practice, advancing your creative and production abilities. You’ll hone your craft in both traditional video and film production, as well as in digital media content creation. By the end of the course, you’ll be a confident storyteller across film, video, and digital platforms—able to tailor content for the audiences you or your business aim to reach.
Compulsory Modules
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
You’ll study within our School of Media, Language and Communication Studies, benefiting from its wide-ranging expertise and state-of-the-art facilities. Your teaching team will include both leading academics and industry professionals—each committed to helping you succeed in the media world.
Our BLOC media facilities will support your creative work in digital media and video production. You’ll use them during classes and can also book audio, video, and lighting equipment to bring your own projects to life.
Throughout the course, you'll attend weekly two-hour English language classes to strengthen your communication skills. Upon successful completion, you'll receive a UEA-endorsed certificate to demonstrate your language proficiency to future employers.
Assessment
This course has no written exams. Instead, you’ll be assessed through coursework portfolios that include reflective, analytical, and creative work. You might produce a case study on a key issue in digital media, alongside reflections on your own media consumption habits. You’ll create short films or digital storytelling projects, with commentary on your creative process.
You’ll also develop presentation skills, boosting your confidence in intercultural communication and professional settings. By graduation, you’ll have a portfolio that tackles current issues in digital media and showcases your creative work—a compelling calling card for future employers.
Employability
After the Course
This course is designed to launch your career across the media industries. Your skills and knowledge will prepare you to work with digital content creation companies—large or small—streaming platforms, or social media firms. You might be producing content yourself or shaping strategies to maximise its reach and impact. Alternatively, you may pursue related careers in digital marketing, luxury branding, or PR for fashion and other high-end brands.
Many of our graduates go on to postgraduate study. At UEA, you could deepen your expertise with the MA Digital Media and Global Communication, focus on production with the MA Film & Television Production, or pivot to marketing through one of our degrees at Norwich Business School. You’ll also be well equipped to apply for Master's programmes at other top UK and international universities, with support and guidance to help you achieve your goals.
