Norwich Mandarin Learning Centre is a Chinese Mandarin school providing individually tailored one to one lessons and group sessions, for anyone interested in practicing Mandarin or working towards HSK/GCSE examinations.
What inspired you to start this business?
I have taught Chinese for more than 3 years. So many people are interested in learning Chinese and about our culture, but it is not easy to find a good Mandarin teacher in Norwich. I saw there was no good Chinese school in Norwich so thought, why not run a school myself? After I graduated, opening a professional Mandarin School was my biggest goal.
I provide several adult students with one to one lessons - the first lesson is free, I get to know their Mandarin background and they can try it out without commitment. I create a special teaching plan for every student to match individual levels and targets. Some of them wish to take exams while others prefer to practice speaking. I also have a group class for children and have lessons on each Saturday morning.
How did UEA Student Enterprise help you?
At UEA Victoria and Finbarr helped me a lot. They told me how to decrease my costs and some ideas about marketing, I am very grateful to them.
What worries did you have while setting up your business, and how did you overcome them?
Finding customers and getting them to trust you is difficult. Websites, newspapers and brochures are my current methods of marketing, and I find I need to update my information on the website frequently. I try my best to teach my students and want them to be satisfied with my lessons.
