University of East Anglia (UEA) adopts the best-practice recommendations of the independent review of university spin-outs
With 60-years of research excellence in Climate, Health, Life Sciences and Creative sectors, UEA generates patents, design rights, copyright works, software, know-how and more. Accordingly, our Intellectual Property (IP) policy and processes ensure that UEA’s IP commercialisation and impact creation routes meet the needs of our researchers, collaborators, and funders and maximise the available opportunities.
To date, UEA has created 14 spinouts generating significant investments, jobs and innovations that meet societal needs. UEA’s culture of research and innovation has raised awareness of, and engagement in, entrepreneurial activities across UEA and our Norwich Research Park. Adoption of the best-practice recommendations will reinforce UEA’s commitment to efficiencies across our IP management and exploitation processes, including Spinout creation. To this end, the UEA IP Regulations and Spinout policy have been updated to meet Recommendation 1 from the Independent Review of Spinouts and the USIT guidance.
The following outputs have been developed to deliver the best practice recommendations and bring efficiencies in the commercialisation process:
(i) updated IP Regulations,
(ii) updated Spinout Policy with details about the process for spinout formation and the timescales involved.
(iii) template agreements for spinout formation and licensing IP.
Fundamental to our Research and Innovation strategy is an ‘impact-first’ approach; UEA is well-placed to build on existing successes through the best practice recommendations to maintain our position as a significant contributor to the UK economy and the global Innovation ecosystem.
