What motivated you to support your staff on the Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship?
My motivation is seeing students achieve their qualification, seeing them at the start of the programme unsure of themselves and then by the end, seeing them as a qualified registered technician is a brilliant feeling.
What factors made you decide to enrol your apprentice with UEA?
The freedom the course gives you for planning your own workplace timetable is fabulous as it means you can adapted this to suit your own work place pressures.
How has the apprenticeship supported your organisation and its business needs?
The way UEA supports the students is amazing; they get all the support that any full time university student would get, which means they have all the help and support they need to be able to excel at the knowledge aspect of the course. The way that UEA also delivers the training is so well thought out as they deliver it in as many different styles as they can to try and suit all kinds of different learners.
How has your apprentice grown within their role while on their apprenticeship?
All of the apprentices we have currently started developing new skills that they will be able to use in their future roles as registered technicians.
What aspects of the apprenticeship bring the most benefit to your organisation?
The main benefit is the fact that we can offer this to already employed members of staff who want to enhance their roles and the impact that they have on patients’ care.
Why is it important for organisations to support their staff on an apprenticeship?
It is so important that organisations support their staff during apprenticeships because it means that you can develop staff members’ skills and abilities so that they can achieve more. It’s all about being able to nurture your work force so that they can achieve the best outcomes for the patients that you are providing a service to.
Do you have any advice for other employers who are considering enrolling someone on to an apprenticeship?
Having staff complete an apprenticeship is only a positive.

It enables us to keep up with Pharmacy Technician demand and grow our workforce, ready to take on the current challenges of providing a pharmaceutical service in the NHS.
How has your apprentice grown within their role while on their apprenticeship?
Our learners have shown huge leaps in clinical knowledge and understanding, as well as confidence to undertake the role. Apprentices learn the importance of professional values and professionalism early on in the programme, which transpire into enhancing their teamwork, responsibility for their own learning and delivering excellent patient care.
What aspects of the apprenticeship bring the most benefit to your organisation?
The level of knowledge and skills and the requirements for assessment ensure that learners have the values required to deliver the high level of patient care that we strive to provide.
Why is it important for organisations to support their staff on an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships really can help staff to build strong teams with the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes required for any successful business – whether this be healthcare or otherwise.

Just do it! It will certainly enhance your provision in the long run!

What motivated you to support your staff on the Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship?
As a teaching hospital we have always supported staff on Level 3 apprenticeships; we had used other providers in the past but found UEA had everything we were looking for to support our apprentices in the evolving world of pharmacy. We hope to continue to support trainees to complete the Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship for the foreseeable future, as the need for Pharmacy Technicians in the workforce continues to grow.
What factors made you decide to enrol your apprentice with UEA?
We have used UEA as a provider for several years now. The course structure, support available and resources suit our needs for a hospital Pharmacy Technician. Students cover a good range of topics and have all successfully completed their programmes with UEA. Each student has the support of a UEA adviser who meets with us and the student regularly, which is really positive.
How has the apprenticeship supported your organisation and its business needs?
The apprenticeship has supported the increasing need for more Pharmacy Technicians in the workforce, and we have been able to upskill staff to support a range of services. Staff complete the course with accuracy checking knowledge following their qualification, meaning they can now contribute to rotas in a relatively short time upon completion of course.
How has your apprentice grown within their role while on their apprenticeship?
We have had a number of apprentices complete the course (8 cohorts of students), all of whom have gone on to become registered Pharmacy Technicians and who are all working in band 5-6 positions. The change in staff over the 2 years is noticeable and post- qualification they have the skills embedded to support them throughout their career.
What aspects of the apprenticeship bring the most benefit to your organisation?
The structured approach allows us to plan activities for the year ahead and around the learning and evidence they are working on. The apprenticeship supports with easy-to- understand roles, responsibilities and evidences and provides clear support which align to GPhC standards.
Why is it important for organisations to support their staff on an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships develop and upskill the workforce, they allow for the use of the levy for training and they support staff in their career aspirations and development.
Do you have any advice for other employers who are considering enrolling someone on to an apprenticeship?
Do your research to understand the requirements of the course and what you will need to do to support your trainee. Grasp the opportunity to upskill your staff with such a lovely supportive provider.
