Work in the School of Mathematics

Achieving your full potential

“Our School is fully committed to creating an inclusive working environment in which all students and staff are achieving their full potential”
Professor Emilian Parau, Head of School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics at UEA is a supportive international diverse department committed to excellence in teaching and research. As well as the permanent members of faculty, Emeritus and Honorary staff, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students form an integral part of our group: a large contingent of faculty, postdocs and PhD students have lunch and coffee together daily.

We are proud to be working to create a progressive and inclusive culture, aiming to provide the facilities and the working environment that allow all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish and to excel. We are well known at UEA for our supportive community atmosphere and have regular work-related and social events to bring staff and students together, sometimes co-organised with our student society MathSoc. We operate a core hours policy, and encourage informal and formal flexible working including part-time working, as well as offering support for career development and transition back to work support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example, maternity leave.

In recognition of our work towards equality, particularly for women, the School  was awarded Bronze Athena SWAN status in 2015, renewed in 2019. We continue to strive to make a difference to everyone working in and with the School. Our Equality and Diversity team meets to analyse and reflect on cultural practices that affect equality at all levels within the School.
