In the School of Global Development (DEV) we offer employability events and opportunities throughout the year to help students find the right career path.
These include our annual DEV employability week, regular professional skills courses, dedicated practical modules and the new student-led DEV innovation summit. We have also produced various online resources including our Life after DEV brochure, Life After DEV online Q&A series and free Future Learn courses.
Employability in DEV is supported by the UEA Careers service and our new DEV Advisory board.

Development Employability Week
Each academic year in the School of Global Development (DEV), we host dedicated employability events that all our students are welcome to join.
Development Employability Week is our annual flagship event and a great opportunity for our students to meet development practitioners and DEV graduates working in various sectors, including climate change and the environment, media and communications, gender, impact evaluation, humanitarian work and health.
In recent years, students have heard from speakers working for a diverse range of organisations including UNICEF, The Red Cross, VSO, BBC Media Action, WWF, The Girl Effect, UNEP, 3iE and Anti-Slavery International. We also invite DEV graduates who have gone onto careers outside of the development sector to share their stories. All our speakers share their insights on their career paths and trends relevant to the sector in which they work.
As well as having the opportunity to hear from (and network with) our speakers, we also offer a careers fair and workshops on finding the right career path, in conjunction with Careers Advisors from UEA’s Careers Central.
Professional Skills Workshops
Working in the global development sector requires not only academic knowledge but a wide range of professional and technical competencies and practical skills.
The School of Global Development provides undergraduate and postgraduate Global Development students the opportunity to participate in a range of practical workshops to develop skills useful for, and expected of, development practitioners. These are in addition to the applied skills taught in many of our courses.
"As a Masters student about to launch back into the world of work, I believe that these exceptional courses have equipped me with the skills to stand out to employers in the field of Global Development’" (Itabaza Sabiti Nsiimenta, 2024, MA Media and Global Development student)
These optional workshops last from one to five days. They are not compulsory and are not assessed. Rather, these sessions are an excellent opportunity to enhance your practical and employability skills as well as a valuable addition to your CV.
Workshops have included:
Filmmaking for development
Introduction to Fundraising and Communication
Introduction to Impact evaluation
Personal Communication Skills for Development
Branding for Development
