Background Information

Bahir Dar University was established by merging two former higher education institutions; namely the Bahir Dar Polytechnic and Bahir Dar Teachers’ College. The Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute, which has transformed itself into Technology and Textile institutes, was established in 1963 under the technical cooperation between the Government of USSR and the Imperial Government of Ethiopia. The institute was a premier institute in producing technicians for the nation. The Bahir Dar Teachers’ College, by then known as the Academy of Pedagogy, was established in 1972 by the tripartite agreement of the Imperial Government of Ethiopia, UNESCO and UNDP and started actual work in the following year under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts. Its general objective was to train multipurpose primary education professionals capable of adopting primary education to rural life and rural development. Its specific objectives were to train primary school teacher trainers, supervisors, educational leaders, adult education organizers and community development agents.

The two institutions were merged to form BDU following the Council of Ministers’ Regulation No. 60/1999. BDU was then inaugurated on May 6, 2000 and has become one of the largest research universities in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

With its 2024/25 enrolment of 18,735 students, BDU is offering educational opportunities through regular, evening, summer, distance, and e-learning programs through its 433 programmes, (of which 113 are baccalaureate, 190 masters, 98 PhD, 12 Specialty, 6 Sub-specialty and 14 certificate programs). Bahir Dar University has 17 academic units; these are: College of Education, College of Science, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Medical and Health Sciences, College of Business and Economics, Biotechnology Institute, Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Ethiopia Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, Institute of Land Administration, Institute of Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Law, School of Earth Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, Sport academy and Maritime academy.

The research centers of the university are Blue Nile water Institute, Institute of Pedagogical and Education Research, Energy research Institute, Textile, garment and fashion design, Abay culture and development research center, Geospatial data and technology center, Institute of Economics research, and Demographic surveillance. Through its 2,500 academic and 5,000 administrative staff in its eight campuses located throughout Bahir Dar City, BDU strives to contribute to the nation and beyond through high-quality education, research, and extensive community engagements.

BDU, through the Department of Adult Education and Community Development, College of Education, is one of the founding and active members of the UEA UNESCO Chair in Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation since 2016. Several activities have been taking place in BDU within the framework of the UNESCO Chair in collaboration with other members: capacity building events, writing for publication workshops, research and project engagements, memorial events, literacy day events, various webinars, publications, etc. The BDU chapter of the UNESCO Chair has been expanding its activities and members and expects a more engaged and eventful future in collaboration with the other UC members.
