Research in educational psychology is an essential part of professional practice and therefore forms a core part of training. Whilst a clear goal of research is to advance our understanding of issues in applied psychology, the process of conducting research provides trainees with an important skillset that prepares them as practitioners ready for applied professional practice. Good research makes us more effective, with practising educational psychologists being expected to apply robust methods when making sense of service user and service data and remain up to date with the most recent and relevant research. Our aim is to support trainees to develop their applied skills and understanding, and importantly, to produce research that is of a high quality and of value to the profession of educational psychology.
In Year 1 trainees undertake a small scale research project in their placement service and in Years 2 and 3 work towards the submission of a thesis portfolio that comprises a literature review, empirical research paper and reflective account.
