‘In or Out’ Ready for the referendum?
The Parish Church at Aylsham was packed on Wednesday night for an event on the UK and the EU. Organized by the local community, the evening provided an opportunity for members of the public to get beyond the political bluster and put their questions to two Fellows from the ESRC’s ‘UK in a Changing Europe’ programme. The event involved short presentations by UEA Professor Hussein Kassim and Catherine Barnard, Professor of EU Law at the University of Cambridge, which were then followed by Q&A. Questions ranged from the effect of EU membership on the ability of the UK to control its borders to the UK’s trade options in the event of vote to leave the EU, and the impact of President Obama’s recent intervention. There was also coverage of the EU budget and the procedures that would need to be enacted in the event of Brexit. With an audience of well over 350, the event demonstrated the appetite of the British public to know more about the background before casting their vote to take a decision that will be the UK’s most important in a generation. Professor Kassim was interviewed about the initiative on BBC Radio Norfolk’s ‘Breakfast Show’ (begins 02:07:10).
