Research Themes

A key feature of our research environment within the School of Chemistry, Pharmacy & Pharmacology (CPP) is interdisciplinarity. We have a natural synergy between biological, chemical and pharmaceutical sciences and many of our researchers work collaboratively on projects within the School, across the Norwich Research Park and more widely. We also have a strong focus on improving education practice for our many courses with staff dedicated to scholarship and pedagogical research.

We have four research themes within the school reflecting our core strengths and expertise:

Pharmacology & Biological Chemistry led by Dr Leanne Stokes

Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry led by Professor Andy Cammidge

Physical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics led by Professor Yaroslav Khimyak

Education Research and Practice led by Dr James Desborough

  • Pharmacology & Biological Chemistry

Our strengths lie in exploring and validating new therapeutic targets for a wide range of diseases ranging from inflammation, cancer, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative eye diseases, and cardiovascular disorders. We explore the roles of important biological cellular processes using novel chemical and pharmacological tools and chemical analysis techniques.

  • Synthetic and Medicinal chemistry

Our strengths lie in the design, synthesis and development of new molecules for medicinal purposes, exploration of natural product derivatives, the understanding and invention of new chemical reactions and processes and development of new materials.

  • Physical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics

Our strengths lie in the design and development of new materials and delivery systems for pharmaceutical preparations, methodological advances in key spectroscopy techniques and in the theoretical understanding of molecules and their properties.

  • Education Research and Practice

Our strengths lie in curriculum design for pharmacist and scientist training programmes plus the continued development of technology, application of simulation suites and use of AI in education practice.
