Campus Life

Mr Thistlethwaite, appointed Vice Chancellor of the new University of East Anglia (1961)
UEA's first Vice Chancellor, Frank Thistletwaite, was interviewed on Anglia Television, two years before the University officially open. He talked about the ‘superbe' location (Norwich municipal golf course) on which UEA would be built and discussed the subject of tutors, residences and the first students.

Pharmacy
The School of Pharmacy was founded in 2003 and has quickly risen to become one of the top pharmaceutical departments in the country, achieving number one in the Guardian University Guide 2013. The degree is highly acclaimed for its innovative content and teaching methods.

UEA is ranked joint second in the country for Communication and Media Studies. Our Film, Television and Media Studies degrees allow students to explore the history and theory of popular film and the cultural and creative contexts in which media is produced and consumed.

Language and Communication Studies
The School of Language and Communication Studies is a small, lively school offering degrees which explore issues relating to contemporary language and translation. LCS provides graduates with well-developed language skills and high employability.

UEA: Building of Village (1963)
Work began on the UEA village in 1963, across the road from Earlham Hall. The original, prefabricated village consisted of accommodation, administration and teaching buildings, as the main campus was not completed until the late 60s.

Biological Sciences
The School of Biological Sciences has a vibrant and friendly academic community, firmly embedded in the internationally renowned Norwich Research Park. It boasts extensive state-of-the-art research facilities as well as modern teaching laboratories.

Art History
UEA's Art History programmes are taught from Norman Foster's world-famous building, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. The building allows students to work in unrivalled proximity to major works by artists such as Francis Bacon, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore.

Denys Lasdun Chosen To Design The New Norwich University (1963)
Frank Thistlethwaite, the University's first Vice Chancellor led a press conference following the appointment of Denys Lasdun as campus architect. Lasdun himself spoke at the event, explaining the layout of his iconic ‘Ziggurat' student halls, before giving an inspiring face-to-face interview with a reporter.

Demonstrations at Queen's Visit to University of East Anglia (1968)
UEA enjoyed a visit from Queen Elizabeth II in 1968. Student debates and demonstrations were held prior to the royal's arrival. On the day of her visit, the Queen was cheered and jeered in equal measure by the crowd, as she toured the modern campus.

The School of History specialises in the political, social and cultural history of Britain and Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Teaching received a 97% satisfaction score in the 2012 National Student Survey, and 96% in the 2013 Guardian University Guide league table.

Finding A Book In The UEA Library – Unedited Production Footage (1970)
The Library has seen many changes since its opening in 1968. To find a book in the early days, students had to note down details from subject-based cards in the library catalogue room. In the right area of the building, they could find the book with the help of the Library's alpha-numeric classification system.

Environmental Sciences
ENV is one of the longest established, largest and most fully developed Schools of Environmental Sciences in Europe. It has a holistic approach to teaching and research, integrating physical, chemical, biological, social and geotechnical sciences into the study of natural and human environments.

Universities of Britain: The University of East Anglia (1974)
Seven new universities, including UEA, were created in the early 1960s. There was great public interest in these institutions as they developed. The Gift: Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (1979)
The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts opened at UEA in 1978, to house the donated art collection of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury. Architect, Norman Foster designed the minimalist, high-technology building, which contains works by artists such as Francis Bacon, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso.

Court 2011
UEA has a formal body known as Court, which meets annually to deliver the Annual Report. This film from 2011 shows recently established, low-energy buildings and gives a glimpse into UEA's efforts towards environmental sustainability.
