Ochnomizu University was founded in 1875 as Tokyo Women's Normal School, Japan's first institution of higher education for women. Before becoming Ochanomizu University in 1949, named after the neighbourhood of Tokyo where it was originally situated, the institution also went by four other titles.

The original campus was destroyed by an earthquake in 1932 and rebuilt four years later int eh Otsuka neighbourhood of Bunkyō, Tokyo. The university gained full university status under Japan's National University Corporation Law in 2004.

Ochanomizu University campus also houses a kindergarten, an elementary school. a junior high school, a senior high school, as well as the university and graduate school. The university currently has 75 partner institutions in 26 countries, creating an environment that promotes study and research across borders, and runs a number of support programmes and special events for international students.
