Widening Participation

Enabling motivated and able students from non-traditional backgrounds and low participation areas, particularly from the region, to gain the advantages of university education.

The University is committed to widening participation to higher education (HE). Our  purpose is to: raise aspirations and educational attainment among people from non traditional backgrounds and under-represented communities to prepare them for HE; ensure opportunity to succeed on their programme of study; improve their employment prospects and open possibilities for postgraduate study; and give them opportunities to return to learning throughout their lives.

The Outreach team within the Recruitment, International and Outreach Office (RIO) are responsible for overseeing all the Outreach activity undertaken by the University as part of our Widening Participation agenda. In addition RIO also acts as the lead contact for the Office for Fair Access and HEFCE with regard to Fair Access and Widening Participation.
