South Asia Student Ambassador
My name is Hassan and I am currently studying MA Education and Development in UEA. My experience lies in higher education international activities. I decided to return to higher education after a study gap of 10 years as a mature student. I gave a lot of thought into choosing the right kind of university to pursue a subject I am very passionate about – international development with a particular focus on education.
I have worked in the UK higher education for over a decade, I have a fair understanding of the UK higher education system. When choosing the right university to pursue my masters, UEA was always in my top 3 choices. The decision to choose UEA as my firm choice was down to 3 main reasons. The city of Norwich, UEA experience and UEA academic reputation.
The city of Norwich is a vibrant friendly city ideal for a student life. UEA is campus based which makes it even more ideal for student life. It is small enough to have a sense of community and big enough to explore countryside with spectacular scenery. Local cities such as Cambridge, Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and Lowestoft are also on direct train lines to the city. You’ll find a fantastic choice of beaches within a train ride of the city and the spectacular Norfolk Broads are just outside of Norwich. I enjoy cycling on a sunny day – there are many scenic cycle paths in and around Norwich and the local countryside will have something that suits you perfectly.
I am aware of the challenges of transitioning to higher education having been a student previously and then a senior support professional in 3 UK higher education institutions. The university experience is one of the most important aspects for me personally. UEA’s support services and its campus based environment helped me confirm my choice. There is access to wellbeing support and the university staff are friendly ready to help always. There are so many activities within the Students Union and the University you can get involved with. There is always something catering to every type of interest from the geek society to paintball society. I was very interested in development work and have joined the international development society enabling me to make wide range of network and current (and future) development professionals. UEA has a real sense of community because its campus based and you bump into someone you know always.
The academic reputation of UEA is consistently top in the UK and around the world. UEA’s school of development is ranked 12th in the QS world ranking; Research Excellence Framework rank the School 4th in the country for overall research, with majority of research ranked “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. The school routinely has recommend policies with its academics producing essential research and consultancy to address some of the pressing global challenges such as water security or education or peacekeeping. This reputation is one of the crucial reasons as it has an impact on my employability potential in the future in particular in my field of work among other things. UEA ranks top not only in development studies but in majority of its courses are world reputed.

Bangladesh: Oahidul - MSc in Marketing
I am Oahidul, a Bangladeshi post graduate student. I have completed my MSc in Marketing, Norwich Business School (NBS) in 2009.
UEA is among the top 20 universities in UK. I was amazed when I arrived in UEA for the first time, because the campus was so beautiful and everything was very well organised for international students' arrival day. The campus is a great combination of nature and modern architecture. As a business student I can say that, the quality of education is outstanding at UEA. All the members of staff and lecturers are very helpful. As an international student I thought I would face a lot of problems such as accommodation, new environment, meeting new people, however I was wrong. I adjusted very quickly and met many people within first week of my arrival.
UEA is located in the city of Norwich. It takes less than 2 hour by train to get to London. Norwich is not as big as London but it offers every facility one needs or wants and it is known to be the safest city in the UK. Norwich is also not expensive compare to London. University offers a special student rate for a bus pass which is for the whole year. Students can travel any day and time within Norwich and other nearby cities. This can be obtained at the UEA travel shop.
UEA offers great student life on campus. This helps to recover from the pressure of studies. Students can join over 100sport, cultural and academic societies. I really enjoyed my student life in Norwich. The UEA Student Union is very active and locals are very friendly. I have lots of friends now from different parts of the world. This is one part of my student life I enjoyed the most. I have met people from over 25 countries at UEA and now I can say I know a lot about those countries, cultures and traditions. I have made great friends for life.
Studying Marketing in one of the best Business Schools at the leading university in the UK is not easy. It can be stressful and hectic before the exams and deadline for course works but school is very helpful and lecturers have time to speak to students.
Before arriving in the UK and Norwich in general I was worried that I will not be able to find 'Halal' food. I thought it will not be available in Norwich but I was proved wrong. I could buy Halal meat very easily in the supermarkets and even UEA canteen offered meals made of Halal meat. UEA also have Islamic Centre and it was very nice for me to pray Jumma prayer and Eid prayer with my friends and brothers. During Ramadan UEA Mosque organises iftars and we even celebrate Eid.
I believe I made a right choice coming to UEA and I am proud to have studied here.
