Research Degrees

Research degrees include the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Master of Science by Research (MScR). All research programmes involve independent and original research, resulting in an extensive thesis at the end of the programme.

Research students in the Faculty of Science undertake a specially developed skills training programme, designed to ensure that they are equipped with the necessary skills and methodological knowledge to undertake original research and progress to a future career.

We offer a range of postgraduate research courses which will enable you to follow your interests to a high academic standard.

  • PhD: Three years full-time
  • MPhil: Two years full-time
  • MSc by Research: One year full-time

PhD programmes usually last for a period of three years, however in some cases they may be up to four years in duration. MPhil programmes usually take two years to complete, however in some cases they may be three years in duration. MSc by Research programmes usually last for one year.

Eligibility

All applicants must have at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field of study.  However, if you are applying for an advertised Faculty of Science PGR studentship project you will find the precise entry requirements in each individual project description which can be found at http://www.uea.ac.uk/sci/studyscience/researchdegrees

 

Current English Language requirements:

 

All research programmes within the Faculty of Science (SCI) require an overall score of IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each individual component.
