Welcome to the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies based in the Arts Building at the centre of the UEA campus. The School brings together staff and students studying a wide range of subjects including politics, international relations, broadcast journalism, media, public policy, philosophy, language competency, intercultural communication and translation studies.

The School is interdisciplinary bringing together teaching and research strengths in these areas and developing a growing reputation for intercultural communication through the history of ideas, philosophical thinking, language and understanding the power, meaning and practice of communication.

Teaching and Facilities

The School has a lively, stimulating and welcoming atmosphere with each disciplinary area enjoying high levels of student satisfaction, we were ranked in the top 20 in the UK for Philosophy in the Guardian University League Table 2019. The School enjoys excellent facilities with a state of the art language learning centre, access to a fully equipped television studio, and hosts a large number of public events throughout the year including talks by visiting politicians, practitioners, translators and philosophers. There are lively philosophy, language and communication and political seminars.

Employability

The School places considerable emphasis on employability with students receiving longer contact time than in many universities, an employability programme which includes internships and work placements and visits to Brussels, Geneva, Paris, London and other international centres. Students are well supported with personal advisors and small seminar groups to provide a friendly and supportive as well as intellectually challenging learning environment.

Research

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) rated 70% of UEA's research in Politics and International Studies as 4* (world leading) or 3* (internationally excellent), as well as ranking UEA eighth in the UK for its research impact in Philosophy (Times Higher REF 2014 Analysis) and joint fifth in the UK for the quality of its research in Area Studies (Times Higher REF 2014 Analysis).
