The School of Economics has a reputation as a centre of research excellence, having been ranked among the top six UK Economics departments in the latest CHE Excellence Group for outstanding research performance indicators. In the rankings of economics departments published at econphd.net for the most recent available period (1993-2003), UEA was ranked fifth in the world and first in the UK for ‘decision theory/experiments'. 

 

The School is a leading partner in two research centres.  The ESRC Centre for Competition Policy is at the forefront of policy formation in competition economics internationally, with advisory links with the European Commission, the UK Office of Fair Trading and the UK Competition Commission.  The Centre for Behavioural and Experimental Social Science is part of the ESRC Network for Integrated Behavioural Science, which launches in 2013.

 

The School's research has been published in most of the world's leading economics journals including American Economic Review, Econometrica, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Theory, Review of Economic Studies, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, as well as in numerous major specialist journals and leading non economics journals.

 

Members of the School act as Editor-in-Chief, or on the Editorial Boards, of many prestigious Economics Journals, including: Experimental Economics; Social Choice and Welfare; Theory and Decision; Economics and Philosophy; Utilitas; Journal of Economic Philosophy; Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization; International Journal of Industrial Organization; Journal of the European Economic Association; Journal of Socio-Economics; and the Journal of Competition Policy.

 

In addition to its core funding, the School has recently attracted research contracts from the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Nuffield Foundation, and the Leverhulme Trust, among others. Robert Sugden is one of a select group UK economists to have been awarded a Leverhulme Research Professorship.
