Work experience and internships

Work experience is the umbrella term for any activity that provides you with experience of the workplace. Although many opportunities are advertised many people arrange their own work experience by making direct contact with organisations or through people they know.

Placements and internships

Placements and internships can be periods of work experience often lasting between one and eight weeks. They can be an opportunity to see what goes on inside a business or organisation, giving you hands-on experience.

We run several internship programmes:

Springboard: campus-based internships: For students with little or no workplace experience, this is great opportunity to work at UEA for up to 12 hours a week for a maximum of 12 weeks.

Summer Internship Programme:
Paid projects of four to eight weeks for 2nd Year undergraduate students in local and regional businesses.

Graduate Internship Programme:
Paid internships of up to 12 weeks for recent graduates in organisations within East Anglia.

Work experience also includes:

Work-based project: A specific piece of assessed work for a course, undertaken at an employer's premises.

Volunteering
: Any work undertaken for no payment. Volunteering is a great way to develop skills and knowledge, improve your employability and make a difference within the local community. Visit UEA Volunteers for opportunities and more information.

Part-time and vacation work
: Usually taken to earn a bit of money - but can be valuable experience in its own right. For vacancies on and off campus go to Employability.

Work shadowing
: A short period (usually a few hours to one week) spent observing staff within an organisation. You will need to approach employers directly to arrange this. Come and speak to us if you are unsure how to proceed.

Year-in-industry or sandwich placement
: Normally falls between your second and third year of study and is built into certain degree courses. Contact your course director or your School to see if this is an option for your course.
