A group of ENV70 alumni and spouses have been having an annual reunion since 2004. The reunion started simply with a Sunday lunch and afternoon stroll around Oxford, then became a weekend event and four years ago – as people started to retire – evolved into a week-long holiday in a large house or pair of cottages. Everybody takes it in turns to organise the event. It has been held in different parts of the country, including Norfolk in 2010 (the 40th anniversary of most of the friends going to UEA) when a number of other ENV70 colleagues also attended or sent messages since they were unable to so.
The 2016 reunion was held from 17 to 24 September, in Tresaith on the Ceredigion coast. As with other venues, the area offers lots of opportunity for wildlife spotting, walking (the walks being of different lengths and degrees of ‘toughness’ as some now find they can’t keep up the pace of their youth), and places to visit – so that everybody is free to do their own thing, whether as couples or in groups. Some of the group are able to stay the whole week, others for a few days, and occasionally there are absences because of other commitments.
The photo shows the fourteen UEA graduates – twelve from ENV70, one from ENV71 and one from EUR70 – together with John Barkham (one of our ENV lecturers) who attended the 2016 reunion.
The class of ENV70 was the third intake to ENV – in other words, when ENV70 started, the school had not yet produced its first graduates! The intake was just under 50 students, so the group of friends who join this reunion comprise about one-third of the intake. The first-year field trip then was to Brathay in the Lake District.
UEA obviously had a big impact. Not only did the group have successful careers and form a close life-long friendship, but (as can be seen from the photo caption) most found their future partners at UEA – some within ENV70, some from ENV71, and some from other schools.
The group has booked a property in north Norfolk to coincide with the ENV50 weekend in September 2017, and hopes to meet up with more former ENV (and especially ENV70) students and staff during that weekend.
