Introduction
Credits from this 20-credit module can be put towards the MA in Advanced Social Work (180 credits). It can also be taken on a credit only basis. Candidates not able to complete the full MA in Advanced Social Work can exit with a Post Graduate Certificate (60 credits) or Post Graduate Diploma (120 credits).
The module is open to qualified social workers and other helping professionals. It is also a pre-requisite for the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training.
The module offers students an opportunity to return to formal study in the arena of mental health and adopts a critical approach to theoretical and practice models of mental illness.
The module is taught over ten days (meeting for one day per week over a ten-week period). The weekly teaching format will include lectures, seminars, individual or small group research/library/guided study time, and individual presentations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Study legislation and policy on mental health and be introduced to the duties and powers of mental health professionals.

Explore practice skills and knowledge required in working with people affected by mental ill-health.

Examine the nature of inter-professional and inter-agency networks and membership in multi-disciplinary teams and relate to the 10 Essential Shared Capabilities as well as professional Codes of Ethics.

Research a topic that relates to the student’s practice and critically apply research and theory to chosen case examples.

Be provided with an opportunity to give an oral presentation to seminar leaders and colleagues that might be later presented at a professional conference or work event.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this course students will be:

Familiar with policy and legislation related to mental health in England. PCF 5

Cognisant of theories, models and current debates surrounding the concept of mental illness and various models that aim to understand the onset and treatment of mental ill-health. PCF 5

An intelligent and critical consumer of the research literature and Evidence Based Practice (EBP) and Evidence Based Practices (EBPs) as well as debates about the central tenets of EBP. PCF 6

Knowledgeable about the needs of people of minority populations who seek mental health services. PCF 3

Proficient in understanding and exploring ethical issues in mental health practice. PCF 2

Able to describe what constitutes effective multidisciplinary working and work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies. PCF 8

Experienced in public speaking after preparing a talk and delivering it in seminar.
Teaching and Assessment
TEACHING
Teaching will take place on Wednesdays between 9.30 and 1pm. We are expecting this to take place in person at UEA. This will be confirmed nearer the time.
You should also plan to take study time on the Wednesday afternoons following the teaching time.

ASSESSMENT
Formative case study outline: Wednesday 6th October 2024
Summative essay: Wednesday 11th December 2024 (3,000 words, 100% of module mark)
