INTRODUCTION
This module can be taken as a stand lone module or the credits can be put towards the MA in Advanced Social Work. It is possible to exit from the MA in Advance Social Work with a Post Graduate Certificate (60 credits) or Post Graduate Diploma (120 credits).
Applications are open to newly qualified social workers who start their ASYE period in the summer/autumn of 2022. There is another module (SWK 7030X) for those who start their ASYE later in 2022 or early 2023. Please seek advice from your Workforce Development lead or the module leader if you are not sure.
The ASYE scheme is designed to help you as a newly qualified social worker (NQSW) to develop your skills, knowledge and capability and strengthen your professional confidence. It offers you regular and focused support through this first year of employment. As an NQSW you will work towards a 40 credit Masters module alongside your day to day practice as a new worker. The ASYE programme and module fit with the requirements of the Professional Capabilities Framework for social work and the Knowledge and Skills statements.
The module is for NQSWs in all sectors.
SUPPORT THROUGH THE YEAR
You will be linked to an agency based supervisor/assessor, who will be a qualified social worker, and receive support for your development from your employer. You will also receive a UEA on-line workbook including detailed guidance, reading and learning activities. There will also be two and a half seminar days led by UEA staff and you will have access to on-line resources via Blackboard and the library
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The learning for the module focuses on critical reflection and the integration of knowledge , skills and values with practice. The teaching will be informed by the Key Skills Statements for both Children and Families and Adult Social Work. The module is also informed by the holistic assessment required by the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) Domains at the level of the first year of employment.
ASSESSMENT
Assignment due on 19th January 2026
Your practice will be assessed via your agency and you will submit one academic assignment for this module. This will be a 4000 word Critical Reflection. The assignment will build on learning from your practice and from reading throughout the NQSW year. It will be marked at UEA; outcomes will be shared with sponsoring agencies. Passing the ASYE overall will not necessarily be dependent on passing this academic module; this decision remains with your employer.
TEACHING
There are 2.5 seminar days. We are expecting these to take place in person at UEA, but there remains a possibility that they will take place online. This will be confirmed nearer the time.
Each of the full days will run from 10am-4pm, which will include breaks.
The final half day will focus on the assignment.
