UEA has made an institutional commitment to social diversity enriching learning for all. This means that we take a whole institutional approach to widening access and participation that spans all aspects of the student journey, including academic, personal, social and professional development.
Uni Unlocked is a summer residential run by UEA Outreach. UEA Outreach exists and receives funding to target statistically underrepresented groups in higher education.
Six eligibility criteria are used to determine places for Uni Unlocked – ethnicity, students with a registered disability, students who are care experienced, students who are estranged, students eligible for free school meals, and young carers. Students meeting any one of the criteria may be eligible for a place if they are in year 10, and attend one of our partner schools.
Evidence shows that groups identified in these eligibility criteria are less likely to progress and succeed at university than other groups. UEA data shows that these groups are underrepresented at the university and have worse average outcomes than their peers.
The eligibility criteria are based on evidence from the Office for Students that shows which groups face additional barriers to progression to Higher Education. The criteria have been developed in line with the Equality Act 2010.
Uni Unlocked – a two night summer school – is a well-evidenced intervention which can enable or encourage the group to overcome these statistically evidenced disadvantages.
This is one in a range of outreach activities, tailored to different student groups. UEA Outreach also works closely with a significant number of schools across Norfolk and North Suffolk to deliver in-school workshops and promote additional opportunities.
Students who are not eligible for this programme can benefit from a wide range of online resources and activities.
