Students can get involved with a wide range of extra-curricular events and programmes which are regularly updated each semester. Our main events are:

Eastminster - expert political analysis from UEA

Eastminster a global blog about politics from the University of East Anglia (UEA). It is based in the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies, which is one of the leading Departments in the UK.

The blog aims to promote debate about politics around the world. On the website you will find expert political analysis and information about the latest research from the University of East Anglia. You will also be able to find more about life at UEA, the experiences of our students and community, and what it would be like to study with us.

But Eastminster is different to most University blogs.  It includes expert analysis from our academics, but they do not live in an ivory tour.  Eastminster also includes posts from our students, and politicians, practitioners, and activists as part of our perspectives from the field of politics series.  It therefore brings our research closer to the world of politics.  We welcome contributions – please do get in touch.

PPL Fest

This is our School-wide festival, celebrating all areas of teaching, research and interest in the School. Its takes place over 4 weeks of the academic year. Our current programme for 2024 includes these highlights:

  • Get more out of the library! This session will build on the previous session in week 4.  We will be looking at more top tips on getting the most out of the library, key Library services that you can use during your time here and tips to make researching and reading easier.  By the end of the session, you should feel more confident about knowing the services the library offers, finding resources both in the library and online, and some strategic reading tips. This session is run by Anne Lawrence – the Academic Librarian for PPL.

  • Introduction to Improv: Do you want to try something different and eat doughnuts? This session is a soft introduction to improv. You'll collaborate with others to create imaginary scenes, but don't worry, in the world of improv NOTHING can ever be wrong (since you're making things up!). So, the workshop will be full of positivity, active listening, and food. Absolutely no prior experience is required. This session has limited places available so to confirm your place please email Claire Cuminato.

  • LCS Cine Club Screening - Another Round (2020): The Ciné Club is a monthly event, screening foreign films with English subtitles. We have pleasant, informal conversation after watching the film with popcorn and water provided!

  • Four friends who work in the same school decide to test a theory according to which a constant small amount of alcohol in the system is enough to boost creativity and lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, Another Round proposes to question the pursuit of happiness and the effect of time on people and relationships.

  • PPL Coffee Break Student and Staff Social: The Coffee Break is back! Head to the POW event and then continue the discussion with coffee and cake. Take some time to relax after the week 7 coursework hand-ins with a hot drink, chat with your lecturers and meet some new people. Rich Daines your Careers Advisor for PPL will be in attendance again running a pop up, so say hello to him and ask any questions you might have about the world of work at UEA and beyond.

  • Choosing, using, and referencing sources: Want to know more about the different stages of using sources?  Learning Enhancement Tutors Denise and Kajsa will help guide you through hands-on activities to build your confidence in choosing the right kinds of source, integrating ideas into your own work, paraphrasing quotes, and getting to grips with Harvard referencing. Sound useful? Come along and join us!

  • Take Five: Succeeding in your studies doesn’t mean working hard all the time. It’s important to know when you need to take a break, recharge your batteries, and look after yourself. Take five is a student-led wellbeing project at UEA that gives you the opportunity to engage with fun ways to improve your wellbeing. In this session, you can enjoy board games, computer games, and snacks and drinks with your course mates in a friendly and relaxed environment.

  • Can Art Change Society?  A Gallery-Based Workshop For Activists, Change-Makers, Or The Simply Curious: This session invites you to be a part of the conversation at the Sainsbury Centre art museum as we utilise the power of art to confront the major challenges facing society today.  Since our Living Art relaunch in May 2023, we have embarked on a radical new approach to exhibition programming.  Rather than having individual exhibitions, we will now have seasons that combine exhibitions, displays, workshops, talks, community projects, and museum lates, all of which ask a single question of relevance to people everywhere.  In September of this year, we launched our first season – Planet for our Future – which asks: How to we adapt to a changing planet?  Please join us for this informal, experimental, and fun session that will take place in our Stuff of Life: Life of Stuff exhibition.  Together, we will explore the extent to which art can help us to articulate our own questions about, and responses to, consumerism and waste.  Together, we’ll design and test a ‘Card for Conversation’ – a post-card sized prompt that will spark an empowering and hopeful conversation.  This workshop will help us to design our real ‘Cards for Conversation’ that we share with visitors to the Centre. This session has limited places available so to confirm your place please email Oliver Brooks.
