Vietnamese Student Ambassador

Hello all! My name is Nhu Ngo and I am your new Vietnamese International Student Ambassador at UEA!

I first heard about UEA from my sister, who got the chance to visit the campus during her university days so I was highly looking forward to come here. I got even more excited when I found out that UEA also offered an excellent Media Studies course with a wide range of optional modules that provide outstanding intellectual and practical skills. Along with the support from the friendly staffs here at UEA, I know this is exactly where I belong.

Being at UEA has given me so many opportunities to engage in different roles to enhance my employability. Besides acting as an international student ambassador, I am also a digital ambassador for my school Arts, Media and American studies. These roles have helped me develop various skills, including team working and communication skills, which will become very useful for my future career. I have also gained much valuable knowledge from the staffs and fellow students around me while undertaking these roles that can not be attain else where.

Norwich is such a beautiful city bursting with art and culture, being England’s first UNESCO City of Literature. There is always something going on all the time so everyone can come and explore. My favourite event throughout the year is probably the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, a 17 day arts festival that offers fantastic shows ranging from music to circus and visual arts programmes.

UEA always supports students in every way possible. There are loads of services available to help us gain work experience and enhance employability, which is one of the things I find most fascinating and important. The CareerCentral offers CV and cover letter checks, mock interviews and assessment centres, quick query drop-in sessions for students. It also organises workshops and talks where guest speakers are business leaders and top recruiters who come to bring work opportunities to UEA students, to share their insights into the working environment and culture in their organisations, to give tips and advice on how to best prepare for job applications, and much more. It is insane how UEA has such strong links with many leading organisations and companies across all sectors, who are willing to reach UEA students, especially at the recruitment and opportunities fair and during the employability week. I always try to make the most of these support services that UEA offers me, because I know the chance may not come again or at anywhere else!

UEA is THE place of opportunities. Without a doubt. 3 weeks into my arrival at UEA and I already got my own radio show at Livewire1350, UEA's award-winning radio station! It is so exciting how there are over 200 societies and sports clubs on campus, so I bet there is always going to be something for everyone, including the opportunity to start a brand new society that is not already there. The campus is always so eventful, you'll never run out of things to do and probably will have FOMO (fear of missing out) like me because you are constantly invited to all sorts of events, whether that be activities organised by the Students' Union, by your School, by your residence (if you live on campus), by societies and clubs. There are bar crawls, movie nights, trips to London, Cambridge, the beach, different cities in the UK and even overseas, Halloween and Christmas parties, balls and dances… These are all perfect opportunities for me to put myself out there, make friends and maintain a good work-life balance.

Before I came to Norwich, I already knew it was a beautiful city. It has been an amazing experience now that I’m finally here - Norwich is a city of wonders to wander, explore and take photos (which is my thing!). The city has such a rich and diverse culture, and I love the fact besides the more “English" bits, there are more urban areas where the youth are so hip, stylish and unique, which creates a perfect mix.

Having been in the UK for more than 4 years now, I know my journey is just getting even better now that I’ve chosen UEA and Norwich to live, work and study.  Whether you're a prospective student or current student, if you have any enquiries for me about anything, feel free to contact me at vietnamstudents@uea.ac.uk or via the link below to the Vietnamese Students : University of East Anglia (UEA) Facebook page.  I’m always happy to chat!

Vietnam: Thuy - MSc Brand Leadership

My name is Nhu Thuy Nguyen, and I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Branding. UEA was my priority choice for UK universities because this was the first university in the UK to provide the Brand Leadership MSc. I held huge expectations for my one-year of study and after 6 months here, I can honestly say the course has exceeded my expectations. UEA has a very strong community spirit bringing diverse cultures together; where international students like me can have our voices heard and feel like part of the conversation without fear of judgement.

The campus feels super homely and I will miss it greatly after the end of my course! I enjoy walking around the lake for hours and watching the sunset. I remember when I first entered the societies festival in UEA, I was shocked by a long list of over 200 clubs and societies. Besides the communities for each country and numerous sports lovers' clubs, they also have societies for Anime, Disney fans... and even Ghost Hunting. Every hobby and interest matters here in UEA. Thus, you get many chances to try out new experiences, exciting opportunities and share your interests with like-minded friends from all over the world.

One more thing I really love about UEA is I can always get the timely support from the loving staff and students around campus. As UEA's motto says "Do Different", students are encouraged to be open-minded and think out of the box. To be honest this is the first time in my life I have experienced this new way of studying where people in class have full freedom to express their ideas and contribute to the lecture. Our biggest concerns including culture shock and language barriers soon faded away. Across lectures, field trips, group work and live projects, I have gained valuable hands-on experience by not only reading books but working with others sharing my passion and enthusiasm in my subject area.

Vietnam: Chau - LLM International Commercial and Business Law

Hello! I am Chau Truong and I am currently a LLM student major in International Commercial and Business Law at UEA. This is my very first time to be here in the UK, especially in Norwich and UEA but I do feel the supportive and friendly environment of the university as well as the people - that make me feel so welcomed.

Being a student of UEA is such a remarkable event in my life so far. I found out about UEA through a scholarship from UEA's new relationship with the Ho Chi Minh University of Economics and Law - my University in Vietnam that I was very honoured to receive. UEA really impressed me with its enthusiastic support from my very first step of application process until now when I am currently a UEA student.

UEA makes me feel like there is always someone that is willing to help me whenever I have any question or problem about my studies as well as some personal issues. Apart from that, I am very pleased by the teaching quality since I am given the opportunity to choose the module that I like and receive knowledge from academics and associate tutors from legal practice (often international city law firms) who are specialists in their fields. Furthermore, UEA also has a 24/7 library with many useful documents and quality facilities that help me to have a different study space other than my room.

One of my most favourite things about UEA is its location. It is located near a large lake and surrounded by many smooth green lawns and trees which is worth for a walk to recharge the battery after a long study day. The campus is far more stunning when it comes to autumn, the leaves change their colour into yellow and the sunbeams reflect on the lake. Thus, it is really a perfect moment for someone who has the interest in photography and I am very pleased that I have such chance to take that scenario with my camera.

It is no doubt to say that I am very happy to choose UEA to get a higher education as well as experience new things and would highly recommend UEA to anyone having a plan to study in the UK since it can offer you a balanced environment between work and play.

Vietnam: Thao - PhD Biological Sciences

My name is Thao Huynh (Huỳnh Ngọc Phương Thảo). This is my fourth year at UEA. I came to UEA in 2014 to pursue Biomedicine, part of Bachelor of Biological Sciences and now I am in the first year of my PhD study (2018). When I was studying high school in New Zealand and in the middle of university application, UEA caught my attention by its reputation in the fields, along with its intensive association with other research faculties and institutes, regionally, nationally and globally. By that time, I was already able to envision myself with numerous opportunities at UEA. Without a second thought, I would like to say that my choice to go to UEA to pursue my degree is among my few right decisions. I feel so grateful that I can also continue my further study here.

My Bachelor curriculum was really well structured. I had 6 modules every year, covering a vast variety of topics. Surprisingly, they were all interconnected and complementary to each other. I was very happy to see how my knowledge firmly advanced every day. Additionally, at UEA, I acquired a number of necessary skills for my future career via hand-on experiences from laboratory work, clinical diagnostics or interaction with experts in the field.

Vietnam: Huyen - MSc International Accounting and Finance Management

My name is Huyen. Now I am studying Master course in International Accounting and Finance Management. To students, especially to international students, choosing university to study is very crucial. There are various reasons that attract and prompt me to choose University of East Anglia. One of the most important reasons is that the quality of teaching and studying of UEA has increased more and more considerably in recent years. It is demonstrated by its ranking in the top 20 of UK Universities. In fact, when I study here, lecturers and staff of UEA always make the best conditions for me to familiarize with life and studying. There are many free classes which help international students develop the English language skills necessary for successful academic study such as Study Skill class, English Language support programme and so on. They are very useful for us to keep up with new studying approach.
Besides, UEA is also an excellent place to experience life in UK. It is the first time I go to abroad to study and live away from home. Therefore, my priority is to find a place which brings me safety and peace. It is very easy and convenient for students to reach the facilities in the campus centre such as Restaurants, Café, Book shop, Union Food Outlet, Banks, Paper shops etc. After hard working, my friends and I can relax by walking on lawn or along the river, dancing and listening to music in LCR, Union Bar etc. Students here are always encourages to join in a range of societies, clubs or volunteer events to make friend, explore culture and enjoin life. Furthermore, staffs in Career Centre, UEA Home Run and Medical Centre are very enthusiastic to help students orientate future job, find part-time jobs or accommodation etc.
In addition, it only takes you about 15 minutes from UEA to go to city centre by bus to shop or visit Norwich – a charming and colourful city. The climate in Norwich is quite warm and fresh. Moreover, you are always welcome by local people who are polite and warm-heated. These are also the reasons for my choice. Now I can believe in my choice, enjoin life here and broaden my mind.
