My name is Claudia Linan and I am currently studying a PhD International Development. I started my studies at UEA last year with my Masters programme in International Social Development and I decided to stay because I was just so happy with everything UEA has to offer.

One of the things I really like about UEA is the personalised attention they provide to every student. Starting with the Dean of Students Office which is always organising various events and workshops, especially for international students, where they give useful advice and assessment. The Career Central Office has also been of great help for me, they have given me guidance regarding CV building and internship applications, I love knowing that they will keep helping us even three years after graduation.

Lecturers and administrative staff have been extremely helpful throughout my whole experience. Through a group e-mail from one of our lecturers I found out about a Research Project for an International initiative in Norwich, and during the summer I collaborated with them. It was such an interesting experience and I am very grateful that the Faculty at the School of International Development are always up to date, which is marvellous because they can share their valuable experiences with the students.

During my Masters’ year I was living at Suffolk Terrace, one of the accommodations at UEA and I can say I really recommend it. It was great because I met people from literally all over the world, I had flatmates from Japan, Russia, USA, Romania, China, and Azerbaijan. One of the parts I loved the most about it was the potlucks we organised; I got to try lovely and exotic dishes. I was lucky because I am still in contact with some of them. I never felt lonely, and whenever I wanted to be in complete silence, the library was just 2 minutes away and it is open 24/7. If this wasn’t enough, the lake was just meters from my accommodation so I would always look out the window and saw people jogging and walking their dogs; this motivated me enough to walk every once or twice a week.

Norwich is a great city! Every time I went to the Centre I discovered a new place I haven’t been to, and I just love it! There are so many events every weekend that one really just need the time! Last event I really loved was the ghost walk around the City Centre, I learned lots about the several legends and spooky tales that are popular in Norwich. I recommend it if you are up for a little fright!

My name is Cecilia Calle and I am studying Society, Culture and Media at UEA. I am currently in my second year in the university, and I can honestly say coming here is one of the best decisions I’ve made! Because I was raised in different countries, a multicultural environment was a crucial aspect when choosing where to study, something that I quickly found here at UEA, which is already well known for its academic excellence and high student satisfaction, as well as a very high reputation in media related courses like mine.

In addition, living on campus in my first year allowed me to meet wonderful, diverse people that became very good friends and a helping hand when needed, while also having all the perks of living on campus. Being both Venezuelan and Colombian, living this far away from home felt like a very challenging experience at first, especially because it was the first time I was coming to the UK, but in the space of a few weeks UEA and Norwich became my home away from home. When first arriving, everything can feel a little intimidating, especially for an international student, because everything feels so different and new compared to what we are used to! But here at UEA, there is always someone to help you when you find yourself in these situations: there are societies for all sorts of interests, services like the Dean of students to help you feel comfortable with your academic skills and constantly improve them, workshops for every aspect of a student’s life, whether it is learning how to use the library or how to write better essays, interesting public lectures, Career and CV services, excellent facilities and a great international environment, you can find it all! All of these services and opportunities were very important for me, because I was coming from a completely different educational system, so I really needed to feel at ease with my academic abilities.

Additionally, I was really charmed by Norwich and all it has to offer. Norwich is a perfect combination of charming little town with endless activities and interesting things going on, and it is so different from anything I had ever experienced before, as cities in South America can be very big and sometimes daunting. It’s a city full of hidden gems, ranging from small little restaurants to a vibrant nightlife, stunning churches and antique shops, and all the great activities a city with both students and a rich history has to offer. The campus is also very beautiful, and has many things to offer. Overall, coming to study at UEA has been an extremely positive experience for me, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way, thanks to all the wonderful things it has to offer, and the welcoming people I’ve met along the way, something very important as a Latin American student!

Hello, my name is Harlen Gonzalez and I am from Chihuahua Mexico. I am currently studying an Msc Marketing degree in the UEA. About two years ago, I started the process of searching for a postgraduate in the UK, I had a few options of universities with marketing programs, but I finally decided to apply to the UEA, a part of the fact that the program is very complete; the university has an excellent academic level, which really helps in obtaining scholarships or funding. The program is really interesting and the lecturers are very well prepared, they're excellent. All the lectures are focused for when the day of tomorrow comes, we can be entrepreneurs instead of employees.

The university is distinguished because of the international students from all around the world, I've had the opportunity of sharing my knowledge, but especially of learning from different cultures; in the time I've been student in the UEA, I have met people from Africa, Greece, India, China, Taiwan, among other countries, and from which I've made really good friends. Besides the academic life, UEA offers a huge range of activities, you can join parties from the International Students Society, concerts which are organized every now and then inside the University and even UEA has its own lake, so you can take a free afternoon to relax and walk around the lake.

Norwich is a beautiful city rich in culture, where you will find an open market, cinemas, cathedrals, museums, among other things, besides the city is really near to London, Cambridge and other interesting cities, so you can easily take a train on a weekend and go travel to other places.

You can also contact Alonso, our Mexican student ambassador, to ask about life at UEA.
Hello my name is Alonso. I am from Jalisco and I am a Master student studying Globalization and International Development at UEA. I chose UEA because of its financial and academic assistance to international students, its high reputation and excellent academic standards.

Studying at UEA has been a great experience! The school of international development offers a great variety of interesting modules and the program is very flexible as to which modules I can take. The lectures and seminars are practical and researched-based and are taught by professors who are leaders in their field, and who are also very accessible and helpful. The learning at UEA is enriched by the fact that the student body is very diverse, particularly for the school of international development. Students from different parts of the world and different background bring different perspectives on the topics being studied. All of these factors contribute in making UEA an amazing place for studying.

But being a university student is not just about academics, but also about enjoying new social experiences. Living in the university's accommodations allows me to experience the friendly and busy community that exists here in UEA. There is always something going on in campus, from interesting academic seminars, screening of films, to social events organized by the many student societies. Students also count with support that goes beyond academic problems, such as assistance in personal or financial problems. I have also established friendships with friendly and interesting people from various parts of the world, which will last beyond UEA. The academic experience is nicely complemented and balanced by the great social experiences at UEA.

Finally Norwich is also a great place to live. The city centre is about twenty minutes away from the university, and one can find anything one need there. From finding a place to try new food, places to buy groceries and clothes, or just a good old pub to hang out with friends. And if you feel like exploring other parts of England, London is only 2 hours away by train. Norwich has a nice small-town feeling to it that is hard to explain in words. You just have to come by and experience it for yourself!

The University of East Anglia is a great place to be a student, both in academics and social terms. My experience here at UEA has been great, and I look forward in making the best of my time left here.

PhD Development Studies

Then I changed to the school of Development to complement my background as economist in development issues in a multidisciplinary environment. My academic life at UEA is has been very productive as I have learned a lot about different topics not only in economics but also in some other areas. This has enriched my academic life at UEA, because you can share ideas and discuss different topics with students from all over the world. Apart from my academics, I enjoy a lot my life at UEA. There are always activities to do. You can go to the sports park to exercise your body or join to any of the societies. With friends I have attended events such as the International Students Party, where every year a group of Mexican students proudly show our culture to other students. There are also movie screenings in the University and even festivals in Norwich. The city is beautiful, it has a cathedral and a castle, malls and an open market. As a whole I have had a great experience studying at UEA.

PhD School of Political, Social and International Studies

Studying at UEA is an experience that goes beyond the classes, lectures and seminars. I am doing a post-graduate research in the School of Political, Social and International (PSI) studies and I can tell you that it has been a terrific experience so far.

You are up to date about your studies area, no matter what it is. The teachers are aware of the latest studies and they are ready to help you to get the knowledge you need. Besides, the Library has eight hundred thousand books and full access to an extensive range of academic journals – which is really helpful when you have to write a thesis or study for your examinations.

The University also provides all support you need to have a good time. The Dean of Students has a team ready to deal with academic and even personal problems. The Union of Students also has an advice and counselling centre that can help you to live here. If you have any religious belief, the Chaplaincy is another place where you can find help and encouragement.

However, your academic life can go beyond this. There is always something happening: public lectures, group discussions, free movies and debates on many subjects, theatre plays and so on. You have only to be aware, take a look on the posters to know what is going on and choose what you want to do. The best part: if you do not want to go anywhere, you can have a walk around the lake and relax.

Finally, Norwich is a calm and quiet city with more than a thousand years of history. The city mix this past with all the modern resources and services you need, from cinemas and clubs to malls and supermarkets. And, for those who like it, a lot of mediaeval treasures to discover. People are very friendly and they are ready to help you. I was told that Norwich has 52 churches and 365 pubs – one for each day of the year. I am still trying to see if it is true. Cheers!

Olga

MA Medieval History

My name is Olga, I've come from Mexico to study an MA in Medieval History at the University of East Anglia. Four years ago, I decided I wanted to do my graduate studies in the United Kingdom, but I was not sure where. There were so many options. so many places, and I found myself swimming in an ocean of data and numbers. The UEA however, was different; they offered me one-to-one orientation and were able to meet my academic requirements while providing me with friendly advice.

The first time I met with a UEA representative was at the British Council in Mexico City, she was very helpful and offered me friendly advice on postgraduate studies in the UK. I looked at other universities in the UK, however no one provided me the opportunities and support the Department of History and the International Office of the UEA had to offer. Once I started my course, I received one to one attention and guidance I needed to complete my studies and my dissertation. I have also made great friends, who have helped me with the challenges of living and studying in a different country away from home and in another language. Now I am starting my PhD at the university, convinced that it is the best place I could have ever chosen, and why its studies are amongst the top rated of the country.

Rafael

PhD Development Studies

Hi there, my name is Rafael Calderon and I am studying the first year of the PhD in Development Studies; also I did a Master in Sciences in Environment and International Development, at the School of Development of the UEA.

Studying a master at the UEA has been one of the most complete and satisfactory experiences of my life.  Academically, the school of Development Studies and its programs are of very high quality. I had the opportunity to share my academic experience with other students not only from Mexico, but all over the world. This experience fortified my academic formation as well as my personal perspective. The master program is intensive and the professors are of world class. Thanks to the support of the researchers and professors of the school, my academic interest grew and I decided to initiate my PhD formation at the same school. Currently, I receive personalized attention of two distinguished researchers of the university and all the available resources to carry out my research in a satisfactory way.  Aside from the resources that the school has, the library is highly updated, and the technical and bibliographical resources that provides are vast.

Personally, and being this the second year living in Norwich, I still enjoy a lot the city and its people.  Living in a city as Norwich has permitted me to know the true identity of the English people.  Since Norwich is a fairly quiet city, it is possible to live without the stress of the large cities, and at the same time the city offers a great variety of entertainment for the free time.

The Mexican community in the UEA is large, at present more than 70 Mexican students are studying diverse academic degrees, even there is a Mexican Society (of which I am president) that organizes events to bring to light the culture and the Mexican identity.  Personally I believe that it is a great opportunity to share our country's vast culture in front of a multi-cultural community such as the UEA itself. Definitively I can recommend UEA to carry out any postgraduate study.

MSc Economics

I've been in contact with this university since 2003 when I first attended an educational fair in Mexico looking for postgraduate opportunities abroad. I can say now that the first impression really matters!!! and I can see that in attending UEA now. I have a background in economics and quite early I understood that if I wanted to be a good economist I had to pursuit further education. That's why I decided to enroll in the MSc. at the School of Economics.

So far I can say that this program has provided me with the tools and knowledge I was looking for to conduct professional research in economics. It has built on me theoretical and analytical skills that I will use in my future career. Although I must say that sometimes it is hard and there are always things to do and study (as it should be!!!), I don't regret of my decision in coming here and I am actually thinking in continue with a PhD.

PhD Education and Lifelong Learning

Doing a PhD at the University of East Anglia has been a very enriching experience.  A research PhD can be a lonely enterprise and most of the time it feels like you are on your own, but at the back of your head is good to know that whenever you need it you have an experienced supervisor, an academic team organising seminars and courses to help you in the process and peers to share ideas with.  The library is very good and even if you don't find always the book you are looking for, most of the times you find quality and up-to-date material, both electronic and print.

My PhD is in Education and I chose this university because of CARE (Centre for Applied Research in Education), a research centre that operates within the School of Education with an excellent reputation related to qualitative methodological approaches around educational topics.  To have first-hand access to prestigious and experienced scholars is a valuable opportunity for any doctoral student and CARE offers that in a very relaxed and friendly environment.  The weekly seminars on methodologies for first year research students are very helpful and it was just inaugurated a renovated work area for students with new furniture and computers.

It is difficult to take the decision to leave your country for such a long period; it is expensive, especially for people like me, coming from developing countries; it is a different language, a different culture, a terrible weather (during winter)… but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Ignacio

Development Studies

Hello, my name is Ignacio I am doing my PhD in the School of Development Studies at UEA and I would like to share my academic and living experience here.

When I was looking for a university to do my PhD, I was looking for a place with excellent academic credentials in my area and first class academic facilities. Definitely, I get more than that at UEA. Besides the high academic level, I have had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries, knowing different cultures and perspectives.

My academic supervisor and I maintain weekly advice sessions to discuss issues related with my academic performance. If I have a problem she always has a solution for it, it makes me feel very comfortable and respected. This has been a great place to develop my research skills, so I am taking advantage of my academic background as well as my professional experience.

In addition the city of Norwich is a perfect place to carry out postgraduate studies; it is small and quiet, not like Mexico City where I come from. Norwich has all the services I need to live well, such as supermarkets, restaurants, pubs, art galleries, theatre, green areas, and sports parks. When I miss the life of big cities I just have to take the train to London, the trip just takes two hours. But when I return I really appreciate the quality of life I have in Norwich and of course the wonderful my university is.

Lydia

PhD Chemical Sciences

My time here at UEA has been great. It was my first choice for studying a graduate course and I am very pleased with my decision. The facilities in my school are excellent, the labs well equipped and all the people are very nice.

I'm doing a PhD in Synthetic Chemistry and so far I have learnt a lot. I have access to a lot of online journals and the research conditions are optimal. My supervisory team have given me a lot of support since I arrived and I have made good progress. As an international student I have also felt very welcome. There is a large number of foreign students and the campus is very multicultural. I have made a lot of good friends so far. I'm very happy to be here.

Citlalli

PhD Environmental Sciences

As international student at The University of East Anglia (UEA) I can say that my experience have been quite interesting. It has been not only productive, but also enjoyable, rich of activities, learning, emotions and new forms of life. However, during the time spent here my live has also experienced cultural differences (among students coming from Asian, European, African and American continents) and emotional feelings caused by the geographical distance between Mexico and the United Kingdom (UK). All this context is what has modelling my nowadays life, as in the course I am doing as in the social life.

First of all, I will talk about my academic studies. The first time I came to The University of East Anglia it was for improving my English language, then I did a MSc course at the school of Environmental Sciences, and finally I decided to continue my professional formation with a PhD programme. I am a postgraduate student at the school of Development Studies. I am doing a research in Water resources management with special emphasis in the role of governmental institutions and the legislation that surround water allocation.

I have found the development of my research a quite hard process because it requires organisation, focus, a lot of reading and systematic working process. However, if everyone enjoys the topic of research or the programme each one is doing, the study and the time become not that stressful, even when it seems difficult.

About the social life, I can say that it has been a great opportunity to learn about many cultures. As I mentioned before, I could meet students from different parts of the world with whom I could share experiences about living and studying abroad, stiles of cooking, ways to travel… that with the time lead us to begin a friendship relation.

The life in Norwich City was not that difficult for me. Once I arrived here I started to live in the UEA residences, which are not far from the teaching facilities. I found convenient to live in the residences during the first year, because at this point I did not know the way to get a house or the most convenient places to rent. After the first year I decided to move to a house outside campus, in which I also have spent a good time.

In the beginning, one of the things I had to lead with was getting dishes for cooking. In the UEA residences, is not get used to rent a room with kitchen stuff. So, I had to buy some plates and some others things were given to me for free for other Mexicans who were almost finishing their studies and were going back home. In general, I can say that from the beginning I have enjoyed a lot my courses and social life at the UEA.
