Joao - one of our Portuguese students

Hi there! My name is João and I am an EU student ambassador here at UEA. I come from Portugal and I am currently on my second year of my Bachelor’s in International Relations and Modern History.

After I decided I wanted to study in the UK (one of the best decisions of my life), I was advised to look at a few top ranked universities – UEA being among them. Several reasons led me to choose UEA and Norwich to be my second home. At the beginning, through the screen of my laptop, what stood out was the certified quality of teaching – with a gold ranking in the Teaching Excellence Framework - and the affordable costs of living in Norwich when compared to other cities and universities.

After investigating a bit more, I realised what a great location Norwich offers: you are just one train ride away from Cambridge or London, and just one quick bus ride away from the coast, in case you’re missing the sea. As someone who must fly to come to the UK, it is also really helpful that you can get a train from Stansted airport to Norwich Station and then a bus to campus; or a coach that leaves Stansted directly to the UEA campus!

The last thing that made me fall in love with UEA was certainly the lively campus. The first thing that struck me when I visited for an open day was how big and beautiful it was. Then, when I got to know it better, I was amazed by everything it has to offer. The huge Sportspark equipped for any sport you might enjoy, the rich library, the in-campus concert venue (that has hosted gigs by big names like Kodaline, James Arthur, Ed Sheeran and so much more!), the concrete architecture that blends perfectly with all the green sights around the campus and the lake – lovely sights wherever you look!

If you have any questions about studying at UEA, you can email european.students@uea.ac.uk.

UEA is home to more than 4,000 students from outside the UK and we welcome students from Portugal to join our vibrant community.
