The PhD is a research training degree. Completion of a thesis is only one of the requirements for the degree. Our goal is for all our PhD students to leave the UEA with both a doctorate and a wide range of research and other skills.

To this end, the School is committed to providing a rich and stimulating research environment, and a broad education in social scientific research.

During the first year of the PhD program, the students are expected to attend a number of compulsory courses and to start working on their research. Having passed their probationary review at the end of the first year,  in the second and third year students have the opportunity to take further optional courses, attend summer schools, and benefit from a rich menu of Personal and Professional Development courses.
