Module Overview / Introduction
Pathophysiology examines the mechanisms that cause functional change in body systems. Comparing nature-nurture perspectives on the health and illness continuum, this module aims to facilitate the development of practitioners who can use their advanced physiological and clinical knowledge to critically analyse ‘holistic’ care, explore the boundaries of current thinking and hypothesise future advances in healthcare.
Online Block Release Dates:

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of systemic physiology and pathophysiology across the life course.
- Discuss genetic, physical and mental aspects of human illness.
- Critically examine nature-nurture interactions, highlighting the link between genetic and /or homeostatic disturbances arising at molecular, cellular and tissue level and their impact on the person.
- Analyse pathophysiological mechanisms underlying human disorders including cardiovascular disease, fluid shifts, hypoxia and acid-base disturbance, neurodegenerative disorders, pain, cancer and diabetes.
- Discuss ways in which disturbance(s) of physiological rhythms can lead to disruption of homeostasis and may cause disease.
- Discuss the role of the health care professional as an external agent of homeostatic control at a cellular and biochemical level.
- Recognise the impact of genomics and technological advances on contemporary practice and the future of medicine and healthcare.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
Every effort has been made to provide information that is current and accurate. Nevertheless, inadvertent errors in information may occur.
