Module Overview / Introduction
This module introduces key educational theories and practices to support your role as a clinical educator—whether as a supervisor, mentor, or practice educator. It recognises the uniqueness of learning in clinical and workplace-based settings, and the vital role of educators in enabling meaningful, patient-centred learning.
You will develop skills and professional insight that are difficult to acquire elsewhere, equipping you to support the development of the future healthcare workforce. By the end of this module, you will be equipped with the knowledge and principles needed to design, deliver, and assess effective learning experiences in practice settings.
This module can be taken as a standalone CPD course or used to progress towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Leadership (PGCertClinEd Lead)
This module is accredited by Advance HE, making you eligible to apply for Associate Fellowship (AFHEA).
- To apply for AFHEA, you must complete a reflective teaching log and submit two testimonials.
- The AFHEA application is optional and not part of the compulsory module requirements.
- Associate Fellowship of Advance HE (AFHEA) is widely recognised in the UK and internationally and can support your career development and progression in education.
- It also grants the use of post-nominal letters (AFHEA).

Module: MED-7034X – Leading Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Clinical Education, enabling you to complete the PGCert in Clinical Education and Leadership (PGCertClinEd Lead).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
- Design and plan workplace-based learning activities appropriate to their workplace and role.
- Discuss and apply their knowledge and skills in teaching and/or supporting other adult learners.
- Implement assessment and the provision of feedback to learners, which are appropriate to their workplace and role.
- Develop effective learning environments with support and guidance for other adult learners.
- Engage with continuing professional development in their professional discipline within a framework of reflection, incorporating research, scholarship and evaluation of professional practice.
- Apply and appraise relevant educational theory appropriate to their workplace and role.
- Implement and review methods for evaluating the effectiveness of teaching and appreciate how evaluation informs future planning and delivery.

Delivery mode: 100% online

Structure: Four asynchronous learning blocks over 12 weeks to be completed at your own pace and at your own time

Live webinars: 4 live 90-minute online sessions via MS Teams per block (recordings available) in addition to optional live synchronous induction/student support sessions

Effort hours: 20 credits = approx. 200 hours total study commitment.
Assessment:
One 1,000-word formative essay
One 2,500-word summative essay on your development as an educator
Two online collaborative assignments on lesson planning and evaluation of teaching
20 credits = 200 effort hours
At least one study day per 2-week block of learning
Attendance expected at live (synchronous) tutorials and webinars
